If he's in basic I doubt he'd be out clearing explosive ordnance, if he was, there's something gravely wrong. Those guys get years of training and are highly specialized. In basic training we were taught to avoid UE at all costs.

I certainly hope you are correct.
Well, I don't want to make things sound better either, news reporting often overlooks lots of details and in doing so, completely screws up the story, so "clearing ordinance" may not mean what someone thinks it means unfortunately. Hopefully this isn't the case.

In basic training there was almost no contact with the outside world, we only got to make phone calls for a short amount of time like 1x a week, and even then it was hard to get anything through.

whenever i read a story about a freak accident on an installation that's not available to the public, i have the insensitive thought this was a cover-up & these blokes were actually given new identities & are being pipelined for doing the lord's® work

The Marine Corps has released the names of four Marines killed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as:
Sgt. Miguel Ortiz, 27, of Vista
Staff Sgt. Mathew R. Marsh, 28, of Long Beach
Gunnery Sgt. Gregory J. Mullins, 31, of Bayou L’Ourse, La.
Staff Sgt. Eric W. Summers, 32, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.
The Marines were members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) community. Camp Pendleton released the following information about the fallen Marines:
