NORCAL is the hizzle
2WD is indeed "fine" but if were getting another van I'd insist on 4X4. Not so much for serious wheelin' but for snow, washboards, gravel, etc. We make it work but it does force choices sometimes.

Google took us on a "short cut" that was 15 miles of single lane timber roads. Frita did amazing, but it isn't something I want to do again. And the dust was EVERYWHERE. There wasn't anywhere to turn around, so we chugged it.

I can think of a half dozen locations we've taken our pickup and camper in the last 3 years where I needed low range and once where I needed the rear locker. I certainly wouldn't take a van to them, but I'd definitely prefer our next vehicle had more than just RWD.

Guess who slid down his driveway with his 2wd van. Should have put more gravel. Lesson learned.

As much as I'd prefer Transit, I found a tricked out Sprinter I liked last night. But it has a roof AC unit which makes it 3 1/2" too high to fit in our garage :panic:

How tall did you make the garage opening on your second garage? For future planning knowledge

10ft.

4x4/AWD Sprinter is ~111 tall
High roof Transit is ~110", can't find a number if the AWD is taller.

edit: and the rooftop Dometic AC units which seem most common on vans state they add 11 1/4".

One time driving my bus through Arizona with some friends in my pre kid drinking days. We put an American flag on a small pole on top in the center. Well it was a bus so we needed gas. We tore a bunch of lights out of gas station. Luckily for us it was closed so we used a card to get gas and left.

All out of flat land to build on, unless I put it where the old septic leach field used to be that was abandoned ~30 years ago. :p
that sounds as good a place as any, unlwas you need a back up leach field location.

My camper is in its own house. Doesn’t have a door and is a gravel floor. But keeps the sun and weather off it.

this is in support:

no separate lines for the AWD variant. 108.6" for long boy with high roof, 107.7" (! sag?) for the extra long boy with the same nominally high roof.
i'm seeing a solid inch of clearance from the math here! 1.9" even for the extra long one

109.6 + 11.25 < 120

easy peasy. just make sure there are no pebbles on the ground to boost you up a bit

still is too close but fwiw the 15k Dometic Penguin II is listed somehow as 25 cm/<10" height rather than 29 cm for the 11 and 13.5k ones

not sure if typo or what

Ever sat in on a physics or math course for premeds?
If some one dozed off in my Physics class at San Jose state the Prof would hold up the black board eraser and ask the class "what's the equation?" we would respond F=MA, then from the front, no matter where that student was he would chuck that eraser and bean them. he never missed. I saw him in the empty class once practicing. He was a hoot. Flat top haircut, suit with a white short sleeve shirt, tie, black framed glasses, pocket protector.

If I put it behind the driver's side back wheel, I have to notch the floor joists and flush the fuel inlet and air valve. If I put it under the driver's side window I just have to cut out the rusted steps that aren't used due to a lack of door there. I might save that spot for additional storage if this 5ish cubic foot box isn't enough.
