I've asked this question in the lounge area.....Too techy, was the answer!

I asked it in the tech area....No reply!

I know you guys are bike intersted so!

I measured my eye to eye on the Vanilla, 5.75", when it was on the bike! Checked FOX website, where it said that the Vanilla came only in 6.5" and 7.785" (or something like that)

So I assume that the actual eye to eye is 6.5"??????

Just curious as to what options I have if I wanted to change my rear shock!

Any Straight 6 owners, or anybody with a 6.5" eye to eye?

They used to make 5.75" Vanillas, back in the '90s. Haven't for a long time. They were on C'dale Super V's, maybe some other bikes as well.

If you measured it as 5.75, you should assume that's what it is. If you want to "upgrade" it, you should be able to find plenty of Vanilla RX's in that size on Ebay, there was somebody selling a crate of 'em a while ago and I imagine still is. It's not exactly a "useful" item in this day and age.....

Does the Straight 6 really use a 5.75 i2i? Is that one of the pull-shock dealio's? If it's a pull-shock, forget it. Nothin out there for ya.

It looks like a regular Vanilla, with the compression knob at the bottom???? I know nothing about the pull shock you mentioned?

I assumed the 5 3/4" was due to sagging? thus the 6.5"

No bike that I know of will sag 3/4" with no rider on it. It might sag 1-2mm or so, but not that much unless it weighs about 100lbs.

A pull shock is a wierd thing, don't worry about it. If what you have looks like a normal shock, i.e. it has mounting holes at each end, you need the size that you measure it (accurately) as.

If your bike looks like this:

Then you do have a "wierd" shock. It's got a trunion mount on it, which is used currently by the Cannondale Jekyll, but I don't know if it's the same size. No other bikes use such a setup, to my knowledge.

You might try the shock used by the GT LTS, which was also of that era and used a similar mounting system. I fear that you'd only find old Rockshox Deluxes though, which would be about as useful as using poop, IMHO. Your best bet is to either send your shock to Push (do a search) or ditch that dog before you get REALLY frustrated with it.

That is the bike!.....I like the shock that;s on there, was just curious about options! Strange, I checked Foxracingshocks.com, and there it said, that a 2001 Straight 6, will take a Vanilla C/O R 7.700 X 1.875????

What gives, the mystery thickens.

I also heard that Stratos rear shocks will fit?

And what is the trunion thing, you mentioned?

A trunion mount doesn't have a "normal" eye at one end -- rather, it has a doo-hicky (technical term-of-art) that allows the shock to be attached near the middle, with the shock body extending past the mounting point.

"normal" shock:

I doubt Fox still makes a shock that fits your bike, but it wouldn't hurt to call them up and ask.

Thank's a lot guys! I understand the trunion part now!......I have a FOX Vanilla, so I guess they made them at one point!

Well, I researched, and I guess my options are:

Throw away bike: Not applicable

Send to push for tune-up: Very likely

Stratos make their Helix Pro, and Helix Expert with a trunion mount

Risse makes also customs with trunion mounts

Any info, good or bad on Stratos?

Towing the party line.
remove the shock from the bike, as the shaft on a fox will tend to extend some when you do that. Normally you can get a pretty good measurement on the bike, as they only make certain sizes

For ****s and giggles, would it be doable to put a "regular" shock on? Meaning, bending "read" (forcing) the thing on there?

What would that do the whole symetry of the bike :help:

I had one of those bike with a stratos on it... it worked great.
I just read SO MANY bad reviews of Straos shocks, everything from complete breakdowns to extremely bad customer sivice, that I'm leaning towards a complete PUSH overhaul :thumb:

Anyone done one of those overhauls? And if you do, how much better do they actually turn out?

According to their website, it sounds like they can turn any ole' shock into a 5th element

Strato shocks aren't bad, I know several people who love them and never had any problems with them.
