I am thinking about buying the 2004 Stinky, it comes with a Drop off triple, I have heard a lot of bad things about it. I also heard that it has only one spring in one side, and the other side is air. Can I put 2 springs in it? I heard of someone putting jr t springs in it

I've been riding a DJ2 for a while, and I was fresh off a Z1 before that. I don't follow the damping trends too closely, but I can say that I love the feel of having some air in my fork. It's probably not the greatest for racing, but I haven't bottomed the bastard out yet, this is a BIIIG improvement for me. As far as the two sides being uneven, rock shox and manitou both did that for years. Truth be told, I could never tell the difference between springs on one side and springs on both.

Anyways, back to your question: is the switch possible? Chances are there is a way to make that work. If nobody here tells you how, then call zokes. If it's possible, they'll tell you how to do it.

I think they compensate with a heavier spring in just the one side. My drop Off Comp has the one spring and taking it apart it has the same SSV valves so I assume you just throw a spring in there and add a spacer on top like the other side. Ride it first deffinately before you want another spring.

Are there any extremely strong springs out there? For instance, would only go about half way on a four foot drop to flat? That would be cool in my opinion, I would definetaly buy them, even if they were bad at soaking up small bumps.

I'd like my fork to move 7" on a 5' drop to flat and 7" on a 12' drop to flat without bottoming in either case. If you only want to use a couple inches of travel why not get a 5" fork and put in motorcycle springs or something, or even better get a ridgid fork with a little flex.

Springs don't control bottom out as much as oil levels do. So you can have soft springs, high oil height, and she won't bottom out. But too high in the oil feels rather crap halfway through the travel.

Well here is what's up:

The 2004 Kona stinky that I have been talking about is going to end in 16 hours, (the auction) should I bid on It for $1000, or should I get the 2003 Kona Stinky Special Edition for $1000. Keep in mind that I do not have more than $1000 to spend, no more for upgrades or anything, so if I buy the 2004, I can't replace the Drop off triple.

What do you guys think?

please post your question here , as several people have told you several times what they think you should do, but you dont give 2 sh1ts what they say because its not what you want to hear. So why even bother posting this question because if no one answers in the exact words you want to hear, you just disregard everything and try to defend your own answer to your own question, stupid arn't you

Simple answer, dont thake this the wrong way, but judging by your questions and fork reqirements, (drops to flat) it dosnt sound like you ride in a manner where the flaws the drop off has will hinder your riding. They make that fork for a reason, as it caters to a merket segment which you seem to fit into. Same reason they make different trim levels of cars. The lower models have cost saving internals, because someone who isnt out racing pro dh, may not hit rock gardens at 40mph and notice spiking. People do huge drops to flat on rigid bikes riding trials. compensate by improving you riding, not your equipment. Id say go with the stinky, keep the tripple untill its performance becomes an issue. if you buy the bike, and cant detect the flaws in the fork, who cares what other people think of it.
Im currently riding a 04 super-t which has a mild spiking problem, and there is a cure, but it really isnt that big of an issue. its never caused a problem for me. just the odd harsh jolt.

I dont care what other people think about the forks, I just want to know that the fork will be ok, and will not need to be replaced within a few months.... and no I will not be racing, or hitting rock gardens at 40 miles per hour, or riding on anything that has a constant jolt like a rock garden.....besides stairs, which shouldnt be a problem since they are so small.

1) If you don't care what we think, WHY ARE YOU ASKING?

2) WTF is mossey and/or moasy?

3) You will be happy with either bike, because it will be yours. Which ever one you get you will say how awesome it is and how it's the best bike, then recommend it to everyone.

Itll be a fine fork. I wouldnt worry about it so much. If it isnt, it wont kake the bike unridable. and you can save $ to get a different fork. I raced dh for a whole year on a 03 Dirt Jumper, and didnt have a problem with it at all. When you upgrade, naturally the new and better will make the other stuff feel old and bad, no matter what level of fork you have.

No, by "not caring" I mean that if everyone thinks that the fork is bad compared to others, and its accualy a good fork that I wont need to replace for a long time, I wont care because the fork is fine. Does that make sense to you?

I didnt know how to spell mousy, but I just checked it in microsoft word. The way I used it is that you kind of slip by the question, trying to aviod it.

3) probably, I just want to know that It is a good bike that can stand what I will do to it. everyone keeps practically saying that I have never ridden a bike before, I ride everyday- but I am too afraid to brake the bike I have on some of the bigger drops and gaps, so I want a bike that is more heavy duty, and has more travel.
