confused? not so much.... from a completely different world view and life-experience than most here..most definitely. (i'm not denigrating anyone's life experience/education/world view, just stating the fact that mine is very different than most in this forum)
The problem with the "you're either with us or against us" slogan is that it separates people into groups without leaving any room for dialog in regards to issues that are far too complex to be dismissed as black and white. When you put people into categories and label them, then you limit your own understanding of a situation. Like I said before, this particular platitude serves only one purpose, to alienate and outrage groups of people. And in this case it's over a relatively insignificant issue.

....and its use basically leaves you wide open to ridicule because it clearly demonstrates that there is no point in trying to have any kind of intelligent discussion with that person....so you may as well mock them.

I hope you realize that Jesus was all about being inclusive to those in need and not excluding folks because of the country they came from (Samaritan thing for instance). He even says that when you help the "least of these" you're dealing with Jesus Himself (Matt 25).

If we're going to "thump our chest" about being a "Christian nation" then we should start acting like freaking Christians (which includes really understanding what Jesus taught) and live it out. Christians in this nation are some of the richest people in the WORLD, and we consume vast amount of the worlds resouces and yet we don't proportionally roll that into making the world a better place (several thousand children in Africa died as a result of starvation last night and yet we spend $35mil on ice cream each year in the US). That includes those to come to our "Christian nation" for a better life, be it legally or illegally, what are Jesus' "hands and feet" doing to bring Heaven to earth for those. Don't give me the "give unto Ceasar what is Ceasars" mess about breaking the law, Jesus and almost all (if not all) the disciples got killed for breaking the law.

My apologies for the ramble there.......it just seems to me that the vast majority of folks who hold the "love it or leave it" attitude are white "Christians".

Footnote: we as Christians should also be Jesus' "hands and feet" to the Muslim "boogey" man as well.............shocking I know.........

I totally agree with your premise, however. Just thought the order of magnitude error should be cleared up ;)

I still don't know what "with us or against us" means... Is it like a sporting analogy, where you cheer for your team no matter what? So the ugly, dirty, underhanded thing that the player just did is ok because he's wearing your team's jersey? Or when a good player (idea) that you've supported for years suddenly SUCKS because he was traded and now wears a different jersey?

seriously?

it's "us vs them" mentality, establishing a black and white, with no room in the middle. You're either a friend supporting us, or the enemy we're trying to fight.

G dubbs famously used it to attack people who were protesting the afghanistan invasion, which was basically a not so subtle dig, accusing the protesters to be in cahoots with the terrorists.

DENAIR, CA - Dozens of bikers made their way from all over the valley to the small town of Denair. They escorted 13-year-old Cody Alicea to school Monday morning, while proudly displaying the American flag.

The superintendent for Denair Unified School District issued a public apology over the weekend to the 8th grader and the people of Denair, after Alicea was told to remove an American flag from his bike at Denair Middle School.

That public apology was followed by an emergency meeting by the school board Sunday afternoon to discuss how they'll handle possible legal ramifications from the incident.

Alicea has been allowed to return to school with his bike, with the American flag flying on the back.

"We didn't think it would get this big," said Alicea on Sunday, after several days of answering questions from multiple media outlets.

"This shouldn't have happened," admitted Denair Unified School District Superintendent Ed Parraz Sunday night. "It was on my watch, I'm going to take full responsibility for that."

"It comes down to me apologizing to the community, the veterans who this offended."

Parraz said the reason why one of his school supervisors asked Alicea to remove the flag on Monday was because of "safety concerns."

He said he has received phone calls regarding the incident from military service members around the country and the world. One of his calls came from Guam, another from Germany.

"It just came to get so big, and kind of a crazy situation," said Parraz.

Alicea led a parade in his honor from the center of town Monday morning to the middle school campus.

Oh, I know how it's used, but... what does it actually mean to be "with us"? Unconditionally accepting like an abused spouse? Irrational support due to our colors being Red, White and Blue, and the opposition's are not? Meek obedience like a kicked dog? Complete adoration like Mac fans? All of the above?

Watch out manimal, faggy brown skin sympathizers are taking over!
With the U.S. House majority in hand and an eye toward 2012, Republicans in Washington have staked out plans for tax cuts and undercutting President Barack Obama's health care reforms. The situation in California presents a reverse image, where Republican influence has been marginalized. Voters this month cleared the Legislature to pass budgets with a majority vote – down from a two-thirds threshold – that will allow Democrats to pass a spending plan without Republican support.

The GOP losses this month left party leaders stunned. Recession-weary voters seemingly wanted new faces and ideas. The Democratic political careerists, Sen. Barbara Boxer and state Attorney General Jerry Brown, a former two-term governor, both were considered vulnerable, facing well-funded candidates.

In the end, Brown easily claimed the governor's chair from Republican billionaire Meg Whitman, a former eBay chief executive who spent more money – at least $174 million – than any candidate for a statewide office in U.S. history. All but roughly $30 million of that was from her personal fortune.
....

But the GOP's biggest problem rests with the surging number of Latinos, who typically vote Democratic, a tendency hardened by the debate over illegal immigration.
It's been said the future happens first in California, and the state hit a little-noticed milestone this month that will have implications in voting booths for years to come. For the first time, Hispanics account for more than half the students in the state's public schools. They will be tomorrow's voters.

"I'm not sure Republicans have hit bottom yet in California," said former state lawmaker Jim Brulte, an influential GOP party fixture.
