Oh yeah I forgot about that one since I'm rarely on the roads at the same time as busses. I'm pretty sure people were complaining about that too around here. Mowing down a few children on your commute is the price we have to pay for Freedom.
all the boomers on the local FB group here are actually very in favor of the camera implementation.

In a van.... down by the river
here in PA they had to resort to putting traffic cams on school buses because people passing buses when they were stopped to pick kids up with flashing lights. its an automatic $300 fine. repeat offenders are not only fined, but can get points on their license or have it suspended for multiple offenses.
$300? That's more of a fucking joke than some sort of punishment.

Should be $5K.

So the school busses pull over the cars?

no. the company that runs the camera systems send the footage of the to local law enforcement, who review it and when confirmed issue a ticket by mail, along with the evidence (not sure exactly how). something like 98% of these tickets are just paid and not contested. basically by the time you get the ticket its too late.

the only ways to reduce speeds are traffic calming features or ubiquitous speed camera enforcement. and we're not getting the latter so I'm all for all the curb bumpouts, speed bumps, chicanes, and other features possible on the roads with mixed user types.

sonotubes, when cut lengthwise into thirds, can be used with some quikrete to form pretty effective guerilla speed bumps.

That means a solid barrier needs to go up in front of the crosswalk while the light is red.

Perfect example was probably from Bikesnob forever ago, showing how much intersections are narrowed by snow banks in NYC winter, yet the traffic still flows. It just can't go as fast into and out of turns - where pedestrians are most vulnerable.

The way shit is getting here as far as pedestrian and cyclist deaths...I'm all for anything that gets people caught breaking the law. There is virtually no enforcement of traffic laws. It's getting wild. People drive in the bike lane. People roll through red lights and stop signs. People don't use signal. People speed through residential areas. No one gets pulled over and ticketed for this shit. City was talking about making no-right-turn-on-red a law. WTF? It's already the law to stop and no one fucking does that and no one cares enough to enforce it.
When did you move to North Carolina ?

Riding past the morgue.
Same exact thing is happening here. There has been 0 traffic enforcement for the past several years and now all the assholes have figured out they can drive however they want with no consequences. The police refuse to be traffic cops, although I don't know what they do instead. The city did just pass a new law that will allow red light cameras to be installed so that is a start, although I haven't heard yet when that is going to happen. The 'Department of Mobility and Infrastructure' has also been making efforts to install traffic calming in problem areas, anything from speed humps to lane narrowing to mini traffic circles, which has helped despite all of the boomer complaints about it.
I know exactly when it started here. The BLM/George Floyd protests. The pigs got their fee-fees hurt when people demanded literally any sort of accountability for policing and the cops basically put out a closed for business sign and haven't done fuck all since. The only time I even see them around town is huddled in groups of 3-5 cars in parking lots having what I can only assume is a circle jerk/coffee kkklatch.

Cameras have gone up here in some places but they are almost inevitably met with violence or taken out of service within months. The roads around here are basically a mad max free for all and it's why I cycle almost exclusively on dirt or greenway, and sometimes even the greenway is sketchy.

the other sub-context here is that this is in Ontario. The Premier has introduced a law where he can pretty much override any municipality's decision to install bike lanes, at his sole discretion. like a fucking dictator. He's already said the province would be ripping up three bike lanes in Toronto, one of which is on his commute to work from his home. He pretty much blames bikes for congestion. Everything is the fault of bikers. By doing this, he's pretty much declared open season on bikers, or legitimized aggressive attitudes towards bikers. His law even has a stipulation that the province can't be sued if someone gets hurt or killed on a segment of road that used to have a bike lane. if fucking back asswards, I hope that fat fuck dies of a heart attack, like his fucking fat ass brother (even if that dickwad died of cancer).

Is he as much a coke head like his brother used to be?
He used to be a fucking hash dealer FFS. How this dumbass keeps getting elected is beyond me.

Yeah, there's a lot of vitriol and anger in my messages about him... I had gotten used to a certain degree of safety in my urban cycling over the last few years. Going back to the days of not being sure if I'll make it home to my family again really sucks. There's been a notable change in how motorized vehicles behave towards us cyclists since he's introduced his legislation. And it really sucks.

those concept videos of that are amusing

those things would be blasted though in the first few minutes in Oakland. they don't give a shit about stop lights stop signs, bus only lanes, speed limits, speed humps are just launch ramps right or left turns may be made form any lane. The only thing they don't do is drive on the wrong side of the street (except when running from the cops or other gang bangers).

They just need to be the pop-up barriers they have at military bases now. Those would stop a bus.
