Poor Canada, they could have had English government, French culture and American knowhow.

Instead they got French government, English knowhow and American culture.

:p

Canada vs. the U.S.
The Washington Times | 08 APR | Richard W. Rahn

Have the Canadians found a better balance between the public and private sectors? If you listen to many in the news media and many liberal Democrats, Canada is portrayed as a more ideal society than the U.S. It is viewed as peaceful, prosperous, honest and humane, and a country the U.S. should try to emulate.

These critics in the U.S. say they do not want a European-type socialist economy but would like a relatively bigger government that provides more services than the U.S. government (and lower drug prices and free medical care) — in short, Canada.

Is it true Canada works better than the U.S.? Let's look at the facts.

Hummmm....

Unfortunately for Canada, all U.S. states, except for West Virginia, have higher levels of economic freedom than the Canadian provinces, with the exception of Alberta and Ontario. As a result, the richest Canadian provinces have incomes that approximate the poorest U.S. states.

"the U. S. has a GDP per capita that is more than a third higher than Canadian per capita GDP ($34,280 for the U.S., $26,530 for Canada). These higher real incomes for U.S. citizens translate into better housing, more automobile ownership, and much higher levels of discretionary income and economic opportunity."

Yes, but considering I had to pay over $4000 for health ins. last year those numbers are alot closer.
I'm not saying "canada is better" I just think they handle certain issues better as we handle some issues better. We could probably both learn from one another. I'm an american and probably always will be(unlesss we have a George Bush the III) but Canada is a lovely place to visit. Ahhhh! BC here I come.

Thanks for the read N8! With a Canadian boyfriend, he often rolls his eyes at my (admittedly) idealistic outlook towards life as a US citizen...I can't help it, lol...I picked a degree that would groom me for public service ;).

Yeah Canada sucks.

I'd like to see them incorporate education into those numbers. Like...how many people per capita earn college degrees. My 4 years engineering degree cost $8000 CDN. My wife's Comp Sci degree cost > $30K US.

Well yes. The tax money paid for it. So the moeny we pay to the gov't (a good chunk of it) goes into making our society better/smarter instead of letting us buy bigger TV's.

I'm not going to get into a long debate (right now) about Canada vs. the U.S., but I really have to take issue with a quote from the op/ed piece reference by N8, specifically:

Canada's leading economic think tank, the Fraser Institute
Now maybe if you're a right wing leaning, Fox News Rules kinda person, you would consider the Fraser Institute to be Canada's leading think tank. They are famous for publishing studies that attack (rightly or wrongly) anything vaguely publicly funded (public schools, health care, etc.) So the conclusions from their study - Canadian Government is a failure - is not surprising

Cheers,

Tim
