If you had $1,000-ish to spend on a Canon Digital SLR, what would you get?

As stupid as it sounds, I don't have time to do extensive research and I trust the judgement of most of the photog monkeys more than my own research. With the $1,000 I want a body and simple lens, but hopefully a larger distance zoom lens as well. A case will also be added into that price.

Thanks.

What about this:
EOS Rebel T1i with EF-S 18-55mm IS Refurbished and EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Refurbished
Also includes a 2gb SD card and Rebel gear bag.

All for $840

damn, just checked on B&H: you can toss in a brand new 55-250mm with the kit i mentioned for a grand total of $1198 which is a pretty smokin deal.

I had a T2i and I really liked it.
You can get the body and a decent "starter" lens for only $715 + tax. gives you another $300 for the extra goodies you mentioned. the only thing I didn't like about it was that in the video mode there was not full time auto focus. Nikon in the same price range does have that though.

Actually, the T2i with 18-135mm kit looks even better. you get your your telephoto option and still have a good $70 for a card and a bag.
