As crude as his setup was i would'nt doubt that it could work and work well.
He just didn't perfect it THAT time. These guys are like McGuyver times 10 and do occasionally get it right.
It wasn't like he was using sparklers and bottlerockets
Are you sure about that? It almost seems like he was relying on a chain of events to happen (alarm clock starts fuse on firecrackers. firecrackers burn through gas cans and light gasoline on fire. gasoline fire sets off propane cannisters. propane cannisters set off (non-explosive) fertilizer) that made it so complicated it was bound to fail.

total failboat:

The Time Square Bomb Was a Crappy Rube Goldberg Machine

The device and the way it was designed speak to a "grandiose purpose." It was apparently fashioned in short order and with seemingly common tools. The clocks were on the floor of the back seat area, and the plastic gas containers were on the rear seat, on either side of a 16-ounce canister with M88 firecrackers. Behind that, the three propane containers were arrayed, one with some firecrackers affixed to it. And behind that was the gun locker, inside a cardboard box, containing eight bags of nonexplosive fertilizer.

I made better bombs as a kid. It is kind of scary what you can do with a basic understanding of circuits and a neighborhood cop/gun-nut who would give you pounds of black powder.

We just used 2 liter bottles, liquid plumber, and aluminum foil. No mailbox was safe from our reign of terror.

I just read The Delta Force, and you have to wonder what happens when someone with training decides to attack...

that is the lamest excuse for a car bomb (VBIED) I have ever seen in my life and I have seen many.

I think they should put him in custody of the families affected by 9/11, I am sure he will be treated fairly
Personally, I think we're going at this whole war on terror the wrong way judging by this incident (and a few others). Instead of "shock and awe" we should be going for "ridicule and embarrass".

Front Range, dude...
They have succeeded if in concept only, in that they have spread more fear and paranoia throughout the US, and given t-baggers more fuel for their paranoid little fires...

you think there's nothing to this other than a very few who're categorically inept? if so, then by that logic we should ditch most efforts to screen, profile, predict, anticipate, etc. and in case you're worried about a militia uprising, recall it was another militia that turned these MI clowns in. domestically, i believe we are largely in check & self-governed.

back to "jihad coming to a town near you": do you know how easy it is to cause fear & panic in gen pop? just send a few guys out to a few food courts or elem schools across the nation w/ 5 banana clips ea. we're talking <$2000 that will result in well N of a billion in expense on our part. lather, rinse, repeat. crippling us economically is the name of the game. raw numbers a-la nagasaki is unattainable at their current level of the game, and is unnecessary.

No offence, but he did predict the use of commercial airplanes as weapons by a good 20 years.

And to be honest, a deranged lunatic with a knife would've done more damage than the "IED" that this guy tried to make. Hell, a guy with 2nd-hand military training and a scoped rifle was able to cause FAR more fear and intimidation among the general populace. Kids with zero military training and legally purchased guns have killed scores of people as well. It honestly isn't that hard to imgaine that a half-dozen terrorists with *actual* training and legally purchased weapons would be able to create far more destruction and death than an overly complex gas-can-and-M80 SUV, even if it *had* worked.

Also forgot to mention the Mumbai attacks: 10 guys with guns and a few explosives killed 160 people and wounded 300+.

I agree, but remember that the use of terrorism, domestic or otherwise, is generally intended to inculcate fear in the general populace and to raise doubt in their minds about the (in)ability of their government to protect them, leading to unrest and desire for change. The shoe bomber, no matter how inept he may have been, and the Christmas day guy in Detroit, caused the general populace much irritation, leading to more security measures and PITA factors regarding air travel. The car bomber will cause the same thing...more stringent security measures, be they overt or covert, and the general public will be inconvenienced all the more.

Al Quedas goal is not to overthrow the US, that is impractical and they are not prepared for it. However, to spread fear and unrest, mistrust of the government (Like we need more of that...) and drive us to overthrow or severely modify our gvmnt is a more reachable and realistic goal. They will never financially or militarily defeat us, but that is not their goal. What has Bin Laden to gain from that? He is already loaded...

Lately, these guys have been clowns, and easily defeated due to their own incompetence and lack of field/tradecraft. But a well planned, rehearsed and professionally executed attack rarely fails. Witness your own examples. The shoe and car bomber guys are patsies, probably mentally unhinged due to circumstance, who have been used by agencies against the US and the rest of the free world to spread fear amongst us...ferar and panic is there, but mostly amongst the tea partiers. The rest of the country is too concerned about getting an I pad or what Hollyweird is doing.

Really? Propane tanks are considered WMDs.
sure. why not? fertilizer is too. i believe intent gives context, much like how uranium isn't a wmd, but can when properly catalyzed it is.

a carbomb is very much a wmd

I was under the impression a bomb is not a WMD or it would have been easy to prove Saddam had WMDs.

Chemical, biological, nuclear = WMDs

Propane, fertilizer = Home Depot

much like how this guy's motives had a political element, so does the moving target of the wmd def: and since he's muslim & this was only blocks away from FNC HQ, it's a foregone conclusion

for now, we'll ignore the inconvenient fact that every day we drop more than this in afgh/iraq. there, it's called "conventional weaponry"

see?

if i were faisal shazzam - or whatever his name is - i'd hope they go for a wmd charge. if it sticks, that's a heckuva precedent, brownie. and if it doesn't, he'll be "home" in time to go to the next hajj

either way it's win/win

Thats kinda fvcked up.

Also, anyone else hear that they are trying to charge this guy with, "possession of a WMD" or something along those lines.:rofl::rofl:

Really? Propane tanks are considered WMDs.
Remember that prosecutorial misconduct I complained about? Charging a person with every thing in the book is one of those areas of misconduct.

Yeah....I know...

I was just remembering one of his books where a bunch of guys (Middle Easterners I believe) shot up 5 shopping malls across the US at the same time with AK's...I figured that that was a bit more relevant to messing with the US citizen's psyche than Eric Bana's finest performance since The Hulk.
