I decided to take my truck over a huge bolder (accident) and put a nice hole in my catylitic converter. I am using this as a perfect excuse to put a borla exhaust on. Do those kits come with everything you need from the manifold down? or do i need to get a catylitic converter too?:bonk:

that does suck cause as was said the kits don't come with cat, and cats are super expensive, and you cant get your car inspected without it (here in PA and most other states!)

You live in VA?

Do you have to go through emissions tests there? If not, just saw out the catalytic converter and getcha some par.

yeah there is emissions here... which sucks... i sealed up the opening i created at the flange between the manifold and the cat. no more noise... just my check engine light is on... o2 sensor? im hoping with some driving it will click off or my buddy has the hook up to see what is wrong and put in the code into the computer.

A lot of the time disconnecting the battery will clear the CEL if the problem has gone away.

You probably lost most of the catalyst in the converter. You should replace it with a new(er) one.

Here in IL if your car is newer than 1996 they just hook up to the computer and if there is a CEL stored you fail. When you do the battery disconnect thing the code isn't cleared it's stored in the computer.

uh... if there's a hole in your cat converter, that will be your problem.

Buy a cheapie cat from an auto parts store - shouldn't be more than a couple hundred bucks.

Not very long. Cats get real hot.

Go to the store and by a high flow cat if you are going to get a Borla one day.

Or just by a cheapy from autozone.

When I lived in VA, I just had my illegal headers/sidepipes exhaust passed by handing the inspector an extra Hamilton. My brother didn't want to do that so we rigged up his '86 Trans Am with headers straight into dual catalytic converters, no mufflers whatsoever and then into resonator tips. Having two el cheapo trak auto cats flowed well, kept emissions low, and when combined with the resonators, had just enough dB reduction to sound mean yet manageable. Even though technically illegal(modified from stock/no muffler), this setup beat the sniffer and the rag test until he sold the car and he never had to lie to or bribe an inspector.

You have two types of aftermarket Systems in California, Cat forward and Cat Back, youll need to replace your Cat...Good news though, i belive borla does make a High flow OEM replacement

Light is on, not because of a Bad O2, but because teh Rear O2 has started working, Most likely The code is P0420 Catalytic Ineffecincy<SP> New cat is teh Only thing that will turn it off.

By Starting to work, i mean that the rear O2 is now seeing Crosscounts where the signal from it is crossing over .495 volts back and forth, Its normal for your Upstream O2's to read Crosscounts, that is where it sees your Rich/lean and controls your mixture as needed. The downstream O2 is normal to hold about .400 volts and stay right at that, when it starts to equal the upstream, the vehicle then knows teh Cat is no longer working properly

ANything newer than a 95 wont work by Disconecting the BAttery, All that does is erase your KAM and reset your drive table strategies, then they wont start resetting till the Problem is fixed, youll just be running at a Default. KAM= Keep alive memory, OBD2 vehicles learn the drivers habits as they drive

My car doesn't have to pass emissions.

Neither did my brothers Corrado. Straight 3 inch exhaust dumped out the side by the door.
