I've got a set of carbon bars that I'm thinking are too wide. They're on my GFs bike.

I'm thinking of cutting them down. Can you cut carbon bars with a pipe cutter, or is this just a bad idea?

Bad idea using a pipe cutter. Hacksaw with a grit blade is a much better idea. Be sure to tape off the area you are cutting first and saw through the middle of the piece of tape to prevent splintering of the fibers.

Pipe cutter will not work. I prefer a cut off wheel on my Dremel, but very fine toothed hacksaws or the grinding blade work well too. Use an old lock on as a cutting guide to get it square. Wear a dust mask too. That's not stuff you want to inhale.

Not sure how wide they are to be honest, but really wide. The main reason I tried them out was to get a riser bar instead of her flat XC bars.

Maybe I oughtta sell em, and get the bike fitted for her and put on some proper XC bars, or a shorter stem. Kind of a waste of carbon bars if they don't work out after the chop.

I'd say measure them to be sure they aren't super wide (27'+) and let her try them for a few rides before cutting or removing them. I wasn't sure my GF would like the switch from flat narrow bars to wide risers cuz of her conservative XC riding style. She loves'em and feels more comfortable/in control.

Haha...well...they're 28", so I should have known... I had tried them out quickly just around the street when I first put them on and they felt wide, but we traded bikes at the end of our ride the other day and they felt ridiculous compared to mine. Not good.

Stay tuned for some Easton Monkeylites in the classifieds...

When I ride the bike, or look at her riding position, she seems too flat with the old bars, and I guess the retardo-width of the other bars I'd put on kind of defeated the purpose of the riser. I guess I'll just move all her controls in an inch and try again.
