Carbon can take a beating. DH'ers dont like it because when it breaks it's breaks immediately and thoroughly, like titanium. Whereas aluminum will stress/crack/bend/break usually in a slower process. i've owned a few carbon bikes(GT sts's) and i did break one frame, but the second one was pretty bombproof.
Giant is good with warranties, if you use it for XC you should be fine. The feel of carbon is pretty unique.

alum in areas like the headtube will fail catostoficly sp? also.

i have yet to have a head tube on any dh bike i have made in 8 years
shear OFF! i can not tell you how mane alum falures i have seen.

just representing for the carbon.
