Carbon steerers

After seeing George's bike, I think I am going to sell my Easton EC90 SL and put alloy back on the bike. Yikes.

He had a wreck earlier in the race which could have contributed to the steerer tube failure. But I think this event will put a spotlight on carbon steerers and when they fail it's catastrophic.

It has highlighted things for me, Andy.

You are likely right, and I would agree, but I don't want to be the one that finds out that it wasn't. I noticed a little scuff on mine before, and will pull it to check it out this evening. I thought it was a blemish from the coating, but I am not entirely sure now.

OK,

1. Hincapie crashed once already. Knowing how the peleton rides, he could have slammed into fallen riders.

2. Hincapie was also racing the Paris Roubaix, which has more than 30k of cobblestones, the kind of riding which I would have refused, much less race at 30mph+.

There's nothing wrong with carbon steerers if you take proper precautions.

Besides, irony of ironies, the fork on Hincapie's bike was actually an aluminum!
From http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2006/apr06/roubaix06/?id=/tech/2006/features/hincapie_trek

CN: So that's everything then, Scott?

Scott Daubert: One thing I forgot to tell you about is that George is running with a different fork; it has a longer axle to crown dimension, and it has a longer rake than the normal Bontrager Race Lite fork.

CN: Is this something new you'll bring into the Trek line?

SD: No, it's actually from Bontrager's Satellite line, almost from their commuter level, but it has dimensions that are appropriate for Roubaix. It's an in-house made fork, made at Trek from OCLV carbon, it's just on a different model bike.

CN: Is it a steel steerer?

SD: No, it's aluminium; it's been blasted then anodized black.

Holy crap. I'm still gonna look extra close. I have been leary since I got mine. I don't know why. Maybe because it is stupid light, and I am stupid fat. Seriously - is 205 too heavy for one???

Mine's not an 06'. It's the previous model with alloy dropouts. I still don't think they specify, but I am feeling a little girly about it.

I wouldn't worry. I was bigger than you, and riding the SLX which is their lightest model a couple of years ago. Never felt any flex, give, or anything that would make me think twice about running it.
Plus, the stuff they hit in PR would be rough on a dual suspension mountain bike, nothing like what you ride in the real world.

I have been super-paranoid ever since I heard about Hincapie's crash. I am riding a Wound-Up, the burliest carbon fork made, and I think I am going to replace it with another Wound-Up!
