Hey guys, got a quick questions.
I have a rear wheel, very basic kind, came on stock Trek 4300 2001 model, its a 7 speed cassette. Would it be possible to take a Shimano 8 speed cassette, take off one or two of the small sprokets, and still fit it onto the cassette hub(of the older wheel)? I want to do this because the frame spacing isnt wide enough to fit a typical 8/9 speed hub, but I wanted to get a casette with highers gears on the bike. Possible?
Thanks
Byron

The frame spacing is wide enough to accomidate a 9spd set-up. You just need a new rear hub/wheel with a 9spd freehub body on it.

You can do what you're talking about, so long as you kept the smallest cog, which is used to secure the lock ring. For example you could remove the second smallest cog, and it will fit and lock down. The catch is that the chain will have some difficulty climbing the ramps on the cog next to where you took one out. Now, you can't do this with the larger cogs, because they're riveted on.

I think the more elegant solution, if you want different gearing, is just to buy a brand new 7 speed cassete with the gear ratios you want. Call Nashbar, Jenson USA, Performance or any local shop that uses QBP distributors -- seven speed cassettes are readily available.

Hi,

If you are interested in a new 7spd cassette I have a Sunrace 11-30t. It was used for a couple of test-run rides before I switched to 8spd on my secondary hardtail. Awesome shape. I also have a burly 8/9 spd wheel (Shimano XT parallax hub(135mm spacing I think), Sun Mammoth rim, black dt spokes, brass niples). I will let go of any or all for a nominal fee, I will also throw in a spacer for the 7spd cassette allowing it to fit onto the 8/9 speed freehub body. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks,
George
