All of the big names (Specialized, Trek, Giant, etc.) offer high quality XC bikes in your price range. My advice would be, go find a bike shop that stocks MTB's. Swing a leg over a few different bikes to find out what you like and don't like.

Once you have narrowed down your search go on the Cross-Country forum and ask again.

Step 1: Exit the Downhill Forum.

Step 2: Ride as many bikes as possible

Step 3: Buy 1 of 100 great bikes and ride the tires off of it.
