I have a cassettee stuck on my (aluminum) Chris King freehub body. Whenever this has happened in the past I have been able to hammer it off from behind with a screwdriver/hammer combo. This time: no dice.

I'ver tried everything I can think of. I even pulled out the freehub body, but there are too many seemingly delicate interals exposed to be able to get to rough with the cassette stuck to the end.

Does anyone have any other techniques?

Well i finally solved my own problem by hammering the cassette off from behind. Although I normally reserve violent hammer-mechanics for Huffys and Kents, this appeared to be my only option.

I finally got the cassette off by hammering off only one or two cogs at a time (starting with the outer small cogs), rather than the entire cluster at once. This of course probably destroyed the cassette, although I'm not even going to try to put it back together since I am putting on new parts anyway.

Of course I could go buy a steel freehub body, but I want to get this thing back together before I have to wait for a steel one to arrive.

So the question remains... is there any better way to remove a stuck cassette?

I was thinking about it and was wondering if you used two chainwhips. One to hold the cassette in place and the other to twist the other cogs backwards. You would have to put one of the outer cogs back on to get at the larger cogs.

King suggests only using aluminum carrier style cassettes, eg XT and XTR on their aluminum driveshell hubs. If you like the economy of the lower end, or SRAM cassettes you should upgrade your hub to the heavy duty stainless drive shell.

Wumpus, I tried a similar thing when my SRAM cassette got stuck on the hub because each cog dug into the hub. The chain whip in the opposite direction can't hold as well due to the angle of the teeth.

In my experience, a large pair of channel locks will grip a chainring like they were designed for it.

is your freehub body torn up? is that what the cogs are catching on? also, do you grease up your freehub body before you put on your cassette?

I always filed the burs off my King freehub when changing cassettes and that helped some, but even with XT cassettes they still get stuck from time to time.
