so i have been looking at all different types of cassetts for my downhill bike, and i came apon this..Sram PG 970 Road Cassette 9 Speed 2007 which if i buy would go on a mavic deemax rim and hub, do you guys think this cassette would work good...for some reason i herd that the road cassettes would be a little better than the mountain ones?..or any other ideas..

it really depends on what range of gear ratios you would like, what type of dh courses youll be riding and your front chain ring size

road cassettes work well for dh since they have close ratios between
gears and they dont have the high ratio gears which youre not going to use in a dh situation, unless of course you want pedal back up hill

Well if you run a 36 then for sure you want an 11t cog so the 11-23 would be the one. SRAM now has a 970DH cass that is 11-26 if you want a little wider range but it's not nearly as light as a road cass is.

so i guess i should get the 11-23...because i am running a single 36t in the front and a 9 speed in the back with the x-9 derailleur!?

Yeah Solvista rocks alot of the track you just have to tuch and hold on. Angelfire is that way too but its a flatter track. Snowmass is/was like a mototrack whoops section the whole way down and keystone is a pedalfest but you need tons of gears for it, get out here for the Solvista G3 race, 2 DHs and a Super D, but not a lame super d, basically its a race down a blue run meant for DH or nig travel trail bikes

My own world inside my head
Im running a 12/25 with a 38 in the front. Best bet is to run what works for you, like My brother runs a 34 with a 12/27, aand My Other riding buddy runs a 40 up front with a 12/27 We all ride the same areas, so there is alot to figure in, As far as the road cassette holding up, dont worry about it, it will work just fine, like others said, it gives you a tighter gear range, and works great for DH

You can allow yourself to have a tad more range by choosing the right front and rear combo.

11T rear with 36T is actually a harder gear than 12T rear and 38T front. However, if you pick the 11-23T w/ a 36T, you will end up with a lower low gear than the 12-23T w/ a 38T.

I believe the Ultegra cassettes come in a 11T-25T if you need more of a range.

My personal choice is 36T w/ 11-23T. I have a lower gear for the stupid rock in the middle of the lower section, and then a higher overall gear than if I chose the 38T w/ 12-23T. Not only that, but your chainring is smaller, providing more ground clearance, and being a weight weenie, it's also slightly lighter :twitch:

The Sram 950 comes in an 11-26 which might be something to consider with the 36T. I'm actually running a 970 11-23 with the 14t removed in place of a 26t from a 950 to make a 970 11-26 basically.
