Awesome, blackmail using "tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and healthcare".

One of the more prominent members of the DC city council is openly gay and from what I read this morning in the Post he's itching for a fight over this with the Archdiocese of DC.

The marriage equality issue in DC is pretty interesting because views on the matter largely fall on racial lines. My impression is that the mostly progressive, left-leaning white portions of the city are all for moving same-sex marriage forward while the much more socially conservative black population has largely come out against. The former sees it as an entirely civil rights issue while the latter opposes it entirely on religious grounds. Oh, the irony.

This picture from a recent anti-marriage equality protest in DC cracked me up.

The ? on that sign should be replaced with "win."

Front Range, dude...
God knows if you let gays marry, the blacks will want to marry anyone they want to soon after. Then women will want to vote, cats will marry dogs...anarchy will reign...

I as well as thousands of cathlics have left the church.

In my case, I see the church focus on the after life. The church looks the otherway when it comes to human right abuses, environmental devastation, and corruption.

The church was given power in the dark ages and it abused it - therefore we can never give them that power again.......... just give them your MONEY and that will make them happy.

long live athiest ..

That's why huge chunks of Christanity doesn't care about issues like that, they literally believe we're leaving and going to Heaven one day so this life / world is "disposable". Emphasis on the afterlife is not something that was in the forefront of 1st century Jewish thought, they believed that focusing on the afterlife was a waste of time when you could be spending time and energy bettering the here and now. Some where there was a disconnect from that philosophy...........:(

But what I don't get is why Christianity overall (or even just the Catholics) doesn't publicly ostracize or at least disown the extreme fringes. Why don't they just come out and say "hey, this isn't what we're all about"?

That's a great question. I wonder if part of it isn't that they/we all have skeletons in our closet so they're hesitant to call them out. I'm all for it, I say call their actions out and be firm that those behaviors don't reflect the churches beliefs.

Extreme fringes are good at getting themselves into power, especially in religious organizations.
