I know we're all tired of this topic, but the optimist in me says woohoo!

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has won a commitment from all militant groups to halt rocket attacks on Israel from the Gaza Strip, his office said.
wow! ALL militant groups? Amazing!

Israel will withdraw troops from Gaza.

Either Abbas will become a hero in the middle-east or he'll be assassinated by a psycho militant group from one side or the other.

heh, my woman said something to that affect too :D

however...
The Israeli army said it had withdrawn its forces from Gaza overnight, before the truce took effect. Palestinian witnesses confirmed troops had left northern Gaza
Israel voluntarily started to withdraw before the truce started.

Seems pretty good so far

I give it a week before someone blows up.
how about an hour?

A Qassam rocket fired from Gaza landed north of Sderot about an hour after the truce went into effect at 6 a.m. Sunday. Another rocket fired at around 8 a.m. landed in an open area in the western Negev city; no injuries or damage were reported.
Israel says the two missles are probably from smaller factions, but are investigating.

It's going to be difficult to find peace when you have some little fvck in the back of class, "ohh Teacher, you forgot to assign us homework!"

Towing the party line.
No truce will hold as they simply don't want peace. It will be hard to broker a deal when both sides simply detest each other that much. So much hatred, so much one upmanship, not enough common sense unfortunately.

Israel made a big step towards breaking the cycle by at the very least pulling out of gaza, but the big test will be seeing if they retaliate for these latest attacks (or the inevitable next ones).

i dont think is israel the one who doesnt want peace.
for the most part, its pretty clear israel has been making most, if not all of the first steps in the last decade or so, but its the lack of cohesion and leadership on the palestinian side, what keeps peace on the sidelines.

i dont think nothing but appealing to the most basic instincts, like survival, can re-condition that response.

absolutely true.

I believe President Abbas wants peace. He has sent his troops into Gaza and made a public statement that the cease-fire is now a law. Anyone attempting to break the cease-fire will be arrested.

Israel is doing their part by not retaliating to the continued attacks this morning saying they're going to wait and see if Abbas can get Gaza under control.

Looks good so far!

you're full of it. assassinations including notorious ones involving cell phones, the building of the wall, regular lockdowns and incursions to hunt out whomever they please, the list goes on: israel gives lip service to peace, but with the upper hand militarily and apparently no conscience to speak of they have no real impetus to really achieve it.

"whomever they please".. that is my friend, the key word here.
its not "whomever they please". its not like they go around parks and kindergardens checking out who they fancy killing today.

its for the most part, a response to people related to war acts, as part of a necessary war campaign under the very little room for action.

when does a "necessary war campaign" become unnecessary? is it when the campaign itself serves to propagate the violence? if so then it became unnecessary decades ago.

easy.
a "necessary war campaign" becomes "innecessary" when a truce for which you take the first steps lasts more than 1 hour.

you see, you can apply that same reasoning perfectly to both sides. yet your initial finger almost by reflex pointed at israel.
whose violence became innecessary decades ago? thousands of amateur rockets and random deaths that give virtual NO strategical advantage, nor progress to its end?

UN resolution 242? 338? Mohammed al-Dura, Diya Tmaizeh? Do you have any idea what any of these mean?
