Chain hunting on cogs

OK, Shimano XT on Ellsworth Joker, new chain, cluster, middle ring, used a DAG on the hanger, replaced cable and sheathing, still hunts when I pedal hard standing. Got noticeably worse during a one hour ride tonight.

The rear derailleur must be about to blow lunch.

Any other ideas?

Thanks, J

You say you replaced the cables & housing...did the skip occur before all these changes and did you cut the housing to the exact same length as before?

Reason I ask, I once cut my housing a bit to short, so when I turned the bars (didn't know this until after taking it to a shop), and especially on hard uphill efforts, the rear derailluer would move due to the tension and experienced the resulting skip. I couldn't figure it out, I would triple check everthing and it would work great on the stand...took it to a shop, they went for a spin on it and figured it out right away.

Hmmmmm all new stuff, it should be perfect. I assume its adjusted correctly because I know you from this site and others. I'd start with checkeing the top pulley. Its supposed to have a little side to side movement to help the final aligment of the chain. Also check the pivots. I find the "b" pivot can seize up which results in the top pulley being too far from the cogs to shift acurately. Maybe the new chain has some stiff links. Check the housing length too like triphop says. Sometimes just a little length difference is all it takes.

Well, took it back to LBS number one, and Dave took a look at it, and we decided to try replacing the rear derailleur, which seemed to have rather a lot of play in the pivot.

With a new XT, it was still ghost shifting on the stand, and dave noticed a lot of play in the cassette - turns out the freehub is loose as a goose.

I will report it cured when it's back together and I ride it.

A few weeks back I loaned my trusty Y-22 to a friend for an adventure race we did as a team. I was in charge of the bikes and went through each one pretty good - including the cassette and freewheel of each bike. A week later I am riding the bike, shifting is fine, pedaling is fine, grinding under power is fine but there is an odd 'floating' feeling and noise when coasting or back pedaling. Rode this way for an hour before I took the rear wheel off and discovered that the cassette binder / lock ring dealio was totally loose allowing the cassette several mm of lateral movement.

I had bad ghost shifting for a week. Turns out that I bent my chain somehow. I twisted two pins transversely and ended up candy-caning one of my links.

Bent chain
Housing too short
Worn out parts
BAAAAD chainline.
