Chain problems

hey guys. just came back from a ride tonight, and while on this ride i had some chain problems. i'll explain my current or semi current set up after the ride. then explain my problem so here i go.
so i'm on this ride tonight and i did some little roll back and my chain fell off, i had a front derialleur set up as a chain guide to keep my chain on. so my chain fell off somehow bending my front derialleur. so i just took it off so i could ride. after i did my chain fell off a couple of times. once getting stuck in between the crank and the bb shell. so what i'm thinking is to take my old cassette and use the spacers out of that and make my own little cassette with 3-4 cogs, like 20 teeth to like 14. in some sort of range. right now my biggest is a 30. so i'm thinking i can just run a couple cogs in the back, and shorten my chain so that it won't fall off but also keep a couple gears i don't use that many right now. i just ordered new pedals and i can't really cancel the order. so that's 60 bucks, and i'm pretty short on cash, like 0. so can anyone point me in the right way with this 3-4 cog idea. thanks alot. if you need some pics, i can show you what i have already and if needed take somemore. thanks, Mike

It sounds like you just want to use mid range cogs on the rear. If that is so, just adjust the limit screws on your rear derailleur so that you can only use the middle 3 or 4 cogs on your cassette. Total cost: $0 :)
