I just broke my HG92 chain (if i remember correctly) I was wondering will the shimano XTR/Dura Ace, chain fit on a bike with LX or XT cassete and chainrings ?
I heard somewhere XTR chain don't work with LX and XT, or was this crank and BB ?
I know LX and XT are cross compatible.

How's Sram chains ? heard they are stronger but heavier.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sram has that cool little Gold/Powerlink link. Easy to Put on and Take off with just using your hands.

SRAM/SACHS chains have the powerlink, which allows you to put on your chain without breaking it. A chain that has been broken will never be as strong as one that hasn't so it makes sense to have the powerlink if you take your chain on and off a lot. I am not sure whether Shimano chains have this feature. I have one PC-59 on my hardtail and another as a backup and I'm very happy with them.

To answer your original question, Yes an XTR chain will work fine. It is perfectly compatable. What you are thinking about IS the interface between the BB and the crank. The spline is diferent. XTR has the same spline as all the road cranks and xt lx all those have a different and slightly wider spline!!

sram makes excellent chains. i've only had ONE shimano chain and i broke it in 3 or 4 rides. ripped it into 2 seperate pieces on a climb....would have thrown a sram on when i got that bike but i didn't have one nor the $$ to get one. but i've never had any problems but the normal wear and tear.

shimano chains are awsome. the biggest difference between the two (sram, shimano) is the latteral play (diflection if you will). shimano's have much less and tend to perform better with thier derailluers. both chains have very good wear life as long as you take care of them. the reason shimano chains have a bad rap is beacuse of poor mechanics. when the chain is broken at time of installation it MUST be re-assembled with the provided pin. the reason is because if you use the same pin you pushed out the peening (the squished parts of the pins that overlap the outer plates) is now broken. so the diameter of the pin is the same as the hole in the outer plate. that equals broken chain.
SO! the pin that is provided is harder than the regular chain pins and also has grooves for the plates to fall into, they act as the peening. so no more broken chain after the 3rd ride.
