what are the steps involved in re-assembling my chain after I take it apart with my chain tool?

Do I need any extra parts, such as pins or will a be able to use all the original parts for re-assembly?

That really depends on the chain you are using.

If it was a newer SRAM chain you shouldnt have used your chain tool because it has a removable link. If you have a SRAM chain and you pushed the pin all the way out (which is a no no) its probably best to remove a half link and get the SRAM powerlink to re-assemble it (i ferget is power link the name?)

If its a Shimano chain then you need a replacement pin.

RM, what's the secret to undoing the Powerlink? I've always found it easier to use a standard chain tool on one of the normal links...

pinch the powerlink between your fore finger and your thumb. Then use a nice little sliding motion and push each side of the link in opposite directions. In my experience it comes off nicely without much forcing.

Also, it helps to do it when the chain is still new -- like in the middle of your first ride, at the end of the first ride, etc., several more times. That will help keep it all loosey-goosey when you've not touched it for 6 months.
