I am going to be getting new chainrings soon and I notice there is a pretty wide margin in pricing. Looking through Speedgoat I see some Truvativs for $9.95 and some Race Face rings for around $34.00.

What changes with the money spent on chainrings?

Ramped and pinned rings are generally more expensive and are almost a necessity if you have a setup with more than one chainring. There is a huge variation is the quality of ramps/pinning, so paying more may be worthwhile if they shift better. I haven't used ramped/pinned Truvativ rings, but I would rank Shimano above RaceFace when it comes to shifting.

Next up in the cost will be the material the chainring is made out of. 7000 series aluminum is harder and will wear longer than 6000 series.

Other than that, my opinion is that you buy whatever's cheapest.

I'm having good luck with my Blackspire Pro rings and a Chuck granny ring(stainless steel).

Some folks around here use the Mono Veloce as a middle ring. No ramps/pins, but not that big a deal.

Shimano had a bad batch of middle rings. Don't know if they fixed the problem.

edit -- the question??? -- shifting and wear -- though shimano is the most expensive and wears the fastest.
