Changing to a single speed in the front.

Hi everyone,

I have an 03 specialized epic with Truvativ Firex SL 28-38-48 laying between my legs. I find myself never needing to go to the 28 chainring to go uphills, and never needing the 48 one while I'm going downhill. So, I just stay in the 38 ring all the time.

Would it be feasible to convert my bike into a single speed in the front?

If so,
Will I need to redo my chain or screw around with my rear derailer?

What parts do I need to get to covert?

Do I need to buy new cranks or can I just get the chainring?

Do I need to replace my bottom bracket?

Thanks on all of your help!

So you want to go with a 1x9 type setup.

I think you'd just have to do the following.

1. remove the shifter and front derailleur
2. remove the little and big ring and maybe throw on a bashguard in place of the biggie
3. maybe get a non ramped middle ring - but not necessary to begin with
4. look into an N-Gear Jumpstop to keep the chain from falling off to the inside.
5. Adjust chainlength and any rear derailleur issues and go ride.

I highly suggest the N Gear. My hardtail has had one for years and I simply can't remember the last time I dropped a chain.

Thanks on the responses guys.

My middle gear is totally screwed up, it just keeps slipping the chain, so I have to get a new one.

Can I slap on any chain guard on my cranks (given its 4 nut instead of 5) ?

Whats the most common teeth number to run in the front with this kidn of setup?

Also I emailed the nGear guy, hopefully he'll send one my way.

Unless you live somewhere super flat, a 38t is a little tall for you only chainring. My hardtail is a 1x9 and I run a 34t. I removed the front shifter but left the der on to act as a chain keeper.

I decided to keep the 22 ring, changed the 32 one to a new one so the chain does not slip, and took out the 44 one and put a race face bash guard. The new setup feels great. I love it.

Still that nGear thing never came through .. does he still sell em or what?
