Venezuela President Hugo Chavez said Sunday he has received warnings from within the White House that the Bush administration is plotting to assassinate him or topple his left-leaning government.

Citing what he said were warnings from an alleged White House informant, Chavez told thousands of supporters at a campaign rally that President Bush has ordered him to be killed before he leaves office in 2008.
Its a pretty smart strategy. He's obviously making it up BUT his people will believe it. And when he doesn't die, he will be able to say "Bush wasn't able to get me."

Now if someone kills him... his people will think we did it. Thats just great. I'm sure some terrorist is thinking about it right now inorder to blame bush and gain Venezuelan support.

I bet Chavez didn't think about that angle when he thought up his little "how to protect myself from being assasinated" plan.

I bet he did.

Maybe he didn't think Bush wanted to kill him but terrorists did. Now he will have Bush stopping the terrorist from killing him. Or maybe he knew bush wanted to kill him and now he has the terrorists and Bush afraid to kill him. Is Chavez a sicilian?

DRB, have you seen the movie "Syriana"? it's fiction, of course, but remotely relevant to this discussion wrt assassination

Yes I did see it. It was enteraining. I also saw Lord of the Rings (all three of them).

However, I've spent way too much time in that region and that industry to not just laugh at the simplistic views and characterizations made by it. The most accurate thing is the plight of foreign workers in the Gulf.

I was curious to get an insider's view of what exactly that movie insinuated. I mean, I understand that in a movie, there's only so much you can fit into a plot, but wow, if its that simple a situation...why dont I understand it?

EDIT: By that I mean, the real world situation, not that of the movie.

Have you read Confessions of an Economic Hitman? If so, was that any closer to reality?

Let me guess the ending, the US and big business is evil.
Pretty close, yes. But goes a long way to explain how and why it's not just evil white men at the top of the pyramid cackling maniacally.

It's a quick (if uneloquent) read, and written by a fella who actually walked the walk, not a journalist or hollywood knucklehead.
