there was a thread a while back by someone recommending some cheap but strong 4x/ds wheels. i searched all over RM and couldnt find the thread.

i wanna say they were ritchey or wtb wheels. does anyone know? it was some "not as popular" brand unlike mavic or sun.

otherwise, does anyone have a recommendation for some complete wheelset thats cheap and good for 4x and ds?

Sun Eight track (Mtx rim with Abbah hubs, choice of 12mm on the back, 20mm front) or the SUV wheelset which is the same hubs but on ryno lites (slightly cheaper).

WTB Duel Dutys are great. I run them on my DH bike and get a whole season riding at Northstar. Basicly a copy of a D-521. They come with an American Classic rear hub now too. The front come either QR or 20mm. Under $500. set, and you can find them cheaper.

The outlaws are great for the price, but I wouldn't use them on a high-end race bike. They are burly enough for dh but not light enough for 4x IMO.
They are 36 spoke. I think they use straight gauge spokes too.

A set of rhyno lite XLs laced to DT Onyx or Hope Bulbs will run you ~$350 or less from most online stores, and they'll be handbuilt, which is nice.

Sun MTX or 8track wheelset they are supposed to be great. I know a semipro up at snowshoe that was running them on his dhr and he liked them a lot.

I got my D521's/marz 20mm front/XT QR rear wheelset from go-ride.com for $240. I think for price, weight, and strength they were worth every penny.

I wouldn't feel so bad wrecking this wheelset as I would $400+ dollar one, that was how I looked at it. I can buy 2 of these for the price of a "good" wheelset and who is to say it's better than what I got. I just picked parts that seem to be reliable and you can get parts for.

I think handbuilt wheelsets are cheaper and just as tough, if not more so, because you can get them built exactly how you want.

I'd say Ringle hubs or something simple laced to Rhynolites. It's the same as the SUV wheelset, but doesn't cost $600.

Maybe I'm off then. They are sweet wheels for the money but don't feel as light as my laser disc/hadley set. I just think they would be overkill for a 4x race bike.

Supergo just had the SUV wheels on sale. They were $300 for the Ringle DH hubs (20mm) on black stainless spokes & Rhyno LIte XLs. Those are the nice lightweight set-up. And $300 for those wheels are a good deal. If you have more $ to spare, Hope Bulbs (stock with titanium cassette body) with EX823 mavic tubeless are about as light/strong for 4x as you get short of a King set-up which you can end up blowing up out the gate. The Hope/823 setup has same strength as deemax, same weight but about $425 through Jensons.
