Avoiding the nine to five
Cheapest way I could see is picking up an old steel road bike at a garage sale or online somewhere. Replace the gears with a fixed hub(surly has a nice one) or use the Surly Fixer. Just make sure you have horizontal dropouts or you won't be liking the experience very much.
