So what you're saying is had north vietnam won, Iraq stayed in kuwait, and if saddam were still calling the shots in Iraq, silver would live in a country where free speech was prohibited. Ok. That makes sense.
Don't be ridiculous.

He's talking about the invasion of Panama. Because you know that Noriega was going to **** my free speech up...

Someone tells you to put a bomb on an airplane to drop on a house full of kids, you do it.
Some of us did it because we like to. Military=paid assassin. I didn't serve to protect anything of yours. I served because I wanted to be there, enjoyed seeing the world and the various opportunities to learn things, learn a trade, fly an aircraft, drink beer worldwide and chase Singapore whores.

if the off chance came up to bomb some exotic people=bonus

Hey, at least you're honest. I have no complaint there.

What I'm ****ing tired of hearing is that getting a paycheck from Uncle Sam to **** up brown people is more noble than curing polio and working for MSF combined, and that I should kneel down and suck your dick for it.

Front Range, dude...
Who around here ever actually said that? I enlisted initially to pay for my continuing education, because I needed a job, and to get out of my home town. I stay because I am good at my job, the bennies arent bad, I enjoy moving around and seeing different parts of the world, and I will retire and begin something new at a relatively young age. I am under no illusions about curing polio, nor do I crave killing brown people, as you seem to think all military folks are prone to do. If you want to see who is responsible for the oppression of the masses, look in the mirror. See who voted for the idiots who tell us idiots what to do, when to do it and how much to do.

And Silver, I would eat a bullet before allowing you anywhere near my dick. Yeah, I hear you are great at it, but no thanks.

Three things:

1) Have you ever seen "Thank You For Smoking"? Because you just brought up the yuppie Nuremberg defense...it pays the mortgage. Some kid in Iraq or Afghanistan got his entire family blown up so that you can see the world. It's a great deal from your point of view...

2) I can't vote. I'm a citizen of a civilized country.

3) Don't be such a homophobe. Next you'll tell me you never snapped a towel off that hard shiny brown ass in the shower...

I'll **** you til' you love me.

Anyways, I'm a normal person, with a normal job. I don't work for clients that I have moral misgivings about. I've never worked for a tobacco company or the Catholic Church, for example.

And no, I'm definitely not a hero. If I wanted to be one of those, I'd have to have a lot of blood on my hands washed clean in the everlasting forgiveness of a uniform from the United States Armed Forces, wouldn't I? After all, that was your criteria for Powell...

Well, now you have lost me.
Still wondering what it is that you do that is so socially and morally redeeming.

And dude, as enjoyable as this little session has been, I like Powell. Get over it. I dont bag on your heroes, or the people you look up to. To each his own, you know?

What if his heroes were Che Guevara or Fidel Castro?

Have you really read this entire thread and have no idea what he's saying?

*hint*

It's not that what he does for a living makes him MORE of a hero than powell.
I can truthfully say I now understand how Helen Keller's teachers must have felt.

I don't think I'm going to get rewarded with a breakthrough at any time soon, however...

What if? I think its time for some of you to get of your moral high horses and accept that others veiwpoints have validity. Opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one and they all stink.

I get it, Silver dislikes someone automatically because they are a member of the military. His bust, not mine. I look up to Powell, he doesnt. BFD. Not once has he offered a contrasting viewpoint regarding who he looks up to, or what makes his world view so superior, he has just bagged on Powell.

I am certainly glad we have a stock of narrow minded idiots around here masquerading as intellectuals just to keep the others in check...

I have wasted enough time on this one, I am done. You boys have your fun.

Actually. No. You don't get it.:rofl::rofl:

My chihuahua would seem like plato to you.

You know more than anyone that we employ an absolutely massive military force in this country. You yourself even stated much (if not all) of this mechanism is almost wholly at the will of whomever holds office at the time. This may include everything from actually defending our shores to chucking 5 million dollar missiles and some guy who gave the president a suspicious look.

Volunteering to be a part of this mechanism, you need to be damn well aware of how and why you may be utilized, good and bad. Someone like powell whom I actually believe does hold his service as a benevolent contribution has taken a VERY active role in some of the more nefarious and downright bullshlt causes the armed services have been forced to undertake. When someone does this, the 'just taking orders' and 'this guy is protecting your freedom' arguments become a little hollow. To willingly become a significant component of an administration that anyone with any sense of moral standing can recognize as having suspect motivations, brings your standing as a 'hero' into question for a lot of folks.

Serving in the military is not inherently a dick move. Being a part of some of the very bad things this government uses this military for and then justifying it as some sort of beautiful holy sacrifice that has some relation to the great things this country has and does very much is.

I'm sorry you don't get this.

I'm not speaking for silver, he's a big boy. I actually think there's some moral fiber in powell's poop. But I also think he's taken part in quite a few things that he should have known better about.......that whole UN yellow cake deal being the most obvious.

Kid, I really think you have misinterpreted both my admiration for Powell and my reasons for serving as I do. Never have I implied that he was without sin. He disgusted me by taking a position in the Bush II White House, and the whole yellow cake thing also make me ill.
But never did I say that serving was the be all and end all, or some kind of holy thing.

The miltary is my occupation, not who I am. One will never agree with everything his boss asks him to do. To think so means you are either your own boss, or fairly delusional. The military is only what I do, not who I am.

My opinions are just that, mine. Neither right nor wrong, simply mine. As I said earlier, I have wasted enough time on this

Opinions can't be right or wrong, but they can be misinformed or illogical.

I bring up Che because it's not a what-if. Many, many people think of him as a hero. Like more than just rockwool. I'm not one of them, but do you think their hero is as valid as yours?
