Cheney: Economic Stats Miss EBay Sales
Fri Sep 10, 9:00 AM ET

Indicators measure the nation's unemployment rate, consumer spending and other economic milestones, but Vice President Dick Cheney says it misses the hundreds of thousands who make money selling on eBay.

"That's a source that didn't even exist 10 years ago," Cheney told an audience in Cincinnati on Thursday. "Four hundred thousand people make some money trading on eBay."

San Jose, Calif.-based EBay Inc. is an Internet auction site where anyone can sell just about anything, including clothing, cell phones, jewelry, memorabilia, trinkets and automobiles.

Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards responded that Cheney's comments show how "out of touch" he and President Bush are with the economy.

"If we only included bake sales and how much money kids make at lemonade stands, this economy would really be cooking," Edwards said in a statement.

The only news sources that have been running that story are highly-partisan cheerleader news sites. When I see it from a respectable news source, I might be worried.

If you consider illegal drug sales and the decrease in teen drug use, then it counteracts the E-Bay growth.

Don't forget to factor in the Garage Sale quotient, that helped the boom all summer.

Hey, if the Democrats fif indeed forge those documents. Then they deserve to get slammed for it, plain and simple. All I am saying is that if and when this proves to be real, you will see it from real news sources.

Especially with the 1.5 million people entering poverty this year selling grandma's china and gold fillings.

Haven't you noticed all the soup lines?

Don't your friends whine about not being able to afford cable tv?

Everyone is driving cars from the mid 90's.

Parents are taking their kids out of private school to sent them off to work in the salt mines.

Everyone is struggling to have money for food and resturant sales have dropped to zero...

The sky is falling...

The sky is falling...

"Four hundred thousand people make some money trading on eBay."

Since when did such a small percentage of a global population have any real effect on American economy?

and i bet the vast majority of that are people like me who'll sell maybe 4 items per year for $100. note to cheney: that's not a living wage these days. i guess it might seem that way if i had a golden parachute worth $20 million in the bank from halliburton... i could even give away a couple hundred thousand each year and still retire in style
