So - I don't have an article to post here...I heard this on the radio news this morning...

Apparently a group of people have decided that Chess is racist because White moves first.

So some dude reinvented the game, and the board now has a series of algebraic calculations you go through to determine who makes the first move.



as if chess wasn't hard enough!!!

Instead of doing that I propose that we take the people who think chess is racist, declare them stupid and use them for medical testing.

anyone who's done the monty hall problem, or weighted dice problem, you'd find that moving first offers no distinct advantage.

(this is based upon what i read in WSJ last week about this & the fact that whitey goes first, therefore it's racist)

I feel like it's a reach because even though i see the correlation and have always amusingly shared the perception, it's still a reach.... and it really doesn't piss me off or anything i find that hurts anyone. I'd rather have examples of how the world is, rather than stuffing it under the rug and pretending that's not how it really is. if anything Opie's argument is more accurate. It can be established that it's classist, it cannot be so evidently seen as racist. Evidently not seen as racist here by many, which i find interesting but not suprising. Maybe it's because i've played the game enough times to actually think about such things...

i'd have to agree with alot of people here in saying it's a big frikkin waste of time, worrying about changing a game for the sake of "pc". For do not such acts merely belittle and discount real attempts to have equality? But i do fear the notion that sacrifices should be such a burden that moving towards a racist free nation seems more of an unnecessary inconvenience rather than a noble aspiration.

Yeah but in checkers, the darker color goes first. So really it all evens itself out.


Now if you want to talk about racism, then pool is really as racist as it gets. One white ball pushing all the colored balls around, but leaving his most hated adversary for the last. The black ball! Yea, that's right, the black ball is made to suffer the longest before it's eventual burial.

Think about that for a few minutes man!
