I'm having the same debate for the next bike - he's almost outgrown the 12" (and is always spinning out gearwise). 16" or 20"? He'll be approaching well over 45" tall at 4 years + ...
mini bmx with 20" wheels. I'm telling you it's the way to go.

just buy them what looks cool ( cheapo box store stuff) until they are old enough to get a hotrock or something similar

kids care more what it looks like at that age than anything. and will destroy a bike in a year easy,

my daughter went through bikes in less than a year. now she is 13 and building her own.

For reference, Syd is 45" at 5 1/2 and riding a 16" bike comfortable with a little room to grow. She's already calling dibs on my bikes 'cause she thinks she's going to be taller than me soon :D
Awesome!! I can't wait to go riding with my daughter in a few years.
