Some pretty spectacular comments lol

No one wants to cause trouble for themselves. These days, everyone is busy enough with their own matters. To say these people are cold-blooded is a bit too strong. Those who want to criticize them should first ask themselves: Would you have gone to help or not?
Who really has to ask themselves. "Would I stop to save a dying 2 yr old girl in the street?"

from what i was told last time i was in china... in the event of a car accident, if someone is injured, no one is obligated to call an ambulance. whoever does call the ambulance is responsible for paying for it.

I was also told that dragons still exist, so take this with a grain of salt.

There is no way I can watch that. :(
Wise man. I'm so sick to my stomach right now. It was so much worse than I could have possibly imagined. I don't know how law, culture and/or morality arrive at a place that make such near-universal indifference possible, but it is horrific.

I have never been to China, but I make jokes about the crassness and callousness of the Bay Area Chinese.

Funny, I have never defended my ethnicity before, but my family is well known for its altruism. My father was the guy on the block who fixed the neighbor's plumbing or car. My sister is a leading educator, and I typically volunteer more than 100 hours a year, besides also being the guy in my neighborhood to fix your bicycle or your plumbing.

America has the worst child abuse record in the industrialised world. Why? The BBC's Natalia Antelava investigates.
For the record, I don't think Australia's record would be much better. Also please don't take this post as any kind of mitigation for the horror shown above. Perhaps this BBC investigation deserves a thread of its own.

How about the numerous documented cases of the US healthcare system literally dumping patients by the side of the road or refusing the poor emergency medical treatment?

The US defined the bystander effect, hell its even called Genovese syndrome. This girl is just one of many well known incidents, we aren't any better.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bystander_effect#Notable_examples

Kitty Genovese
The case of Kitty Genovese is often cited as an example of the "bystander effect". It is also the case that originally stimulated social psychological research in this area. 28 year-old Kitty Genovese was stabbed to death on March 13, 1964 by a serial rapist and murderer on her way back to her Queens, New York apartment from work at 3am. According to newspaper accounts, the attack lasted for at least a half an hour during which time Genovese screamed and pleaded for help. The murderer attacked Genovese and stabbed her, then fled the scene after attracting the attention of a neighbor. The killer then returned ten minutes later and finished the assault. Newspaper reports after Genovese's death claimed that 38 witnesses watched the stabbings and failed to intervene or even contact the police until after the attacker fled and Genovese had died. This led to widespread public attention, and many editorials.

According to an article published in American Psychologist in 2007, the original story of Kitty Genovese's murder was exaggerated by the media. Specifically, there were not 38 eyewitnesses, the police were contacted at least once during the attack, and many of the bystanders who overheard the attack could not actually see the event. The authors of the article suggest that the story continues to be misrepresented in social psychology textbooks because it functions as a parable and serves as a dramatic example for students.

Stanley Milgram hypothesized that the bystanders′ callous behavior was caused by the strategies they had adopted in daily life to cope with information overload. This idea has been supported to varying degrees by empirical research.

New York’s Central Park Parade
In June 2000 following a parade (The Puerto Rican Day parade) alongside New York’s Central Park which more than a million locals and tourists had attended, a pack of alcohol-fueled men became sexually aggressive. They began to grope and strip nearly 60 women. At least two victims approached nearby police who did nothing to help them. Nobody dialed 911 or offered assistance.

Sergio Aguiar
On June 16, 2008, on a country road outside Turlock, California, friends, family and strangers, including a volunteer fire chief, stood by as Sergio Aguiar methodically stomped his two-year-old son Axel Casian to death, explaining in a calm voice that he "had to get the demons out" of the boy. He stopped at one point to turn on the hazard lights on his truck. No one moved to take the child or attack Aguiar. Witnesses said they were all afraid to intervene because Aguiar "might have something in his pocket", although some people looked for rocks or boards hoping to find something to subdue him. The fire chief's fiancee called 911. Police officer Jerry Ramar arrived by helicopter and told Aguiar to stop. Aguiar gave Ramar the finger and Ramar shot him in the head. Police officers and psychologists later explained that the inaction of the crowd was justified in that "ordinary people aren't going to tackle a psychotic," that they were not "psychologically prepared" to intervene, and that being frozen in indecision and fear is a normal reaction.

Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax
In April 2010 Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax was stabbed to death after coming to the aid of a woman who was being attacked. At least twenty people walked by while he lay dying on a sidewalk in Queens.

Simone Back
On Christmas Day 2010, Brighton UK woman, Simone Back, posted a suicide note on the social networking site Facebook. Several of her 1,082 Facebook friends commented on her status, but none of them called for emergency services or went to check on her personally. Some of her friends lived within walking distance of Simone's flat. Her body was discovered by police the next day. The incident likely reflects a popular myth about suicide, that a person who talks about killing themselves is unlikely to do it.

Yue Yue (悦悦)
In October 2011, a two year old girl YueYue was run over by a truck in China, and because bystanders didn't move the body, a second truck ran her over. A total of 18 passerbys ignored the body, going so far as to walk around the blood, and the girl was left dying for 7 minutes before a garbage collector discovered the body and called for help.

has there been a story like this on China? with a population 4 times as big as ours and a hatred for little girls, id think they would have a high rate too
I'd think China's rate would be off the charts. The BBC, in their investigation, do make the distinction of "in the industrialised world".

I always thought it was hype. People in my neighborhood not far from Queens came out when there were robbers.

It wasn't like a million people streamed by when the women were getting attacked, but New Yorkers know to avoid the PRD parade because of idiots like these.

This is an odd one because of the physical risk involved for anyone trying to stop it. If you don't believe that your personal safety overwhelms your thinking, try breaking up the next street fight you see.

The person with 90 Facebook friends has more real friends than the person with 1000.

I don't think you've had to before. This isn't complaining about the rude old Chinese lady on the #1 Bus, and I have no doubt that your family is good people. I'm guessing most of those 18 folks in the video are individually decent people. My issue is that 18 of them ignored this, AND the comments in the thread seem to indicate that even removed from the trauma and uncertainty of being there, many seem to think their behavior was both rational and forgivable. I find that terrifying.

I'm sure you have noticed a certain callousness with Chinese around SF. I wonder if taken to a place where human life was devalued, would it be worse.

I really had no issue with Chinese in SF. The only thing that irked me, and this is more of a cultural thing was that the sense of "personal space" was different. They though nothing about being pressed all up against you on the bus.

All in all though, pretty nice people. Maybe they were cussing me out and I didn't even know it though.

I would agree with a street fight, but this is a brutal attack on a child. I would do something. I would also do the same for an attack on a female. But that is just me.

After living in the bay area and seeing very clearly what you talk about & then visiting a non-touristy part of china, it's very clear to see the connection. Make me want to b*tch slap people on a regular basis. I guess that's the "culture."

Granted, this is not everyone, but as you clearly see in the video, it can be seriously, seriously f'd! You think the driving in the bay area is bad, try Fuzhuo... straight bat**** insane. Take that attitude and place it behind the wheel... you get the picture.

no doubt about the articles numbers....but in a third world (non "industrialized") country you can multiply those numbers by 3 easy. you will just never hear about it because there are no figures on it or anyone reporting it.

Speaking as someone who 1. Has suffered "Major Multiple Trauma" after being run over, and 2. Is the father of a three year old girl, there was NO FVCKING WAY, I even considered watching that video.
