We got a bunch of pink ones but that's about it...no normal stuff yet. The Breast Cancer pink ones were on schedule so I assume the others will be on there way soon.

Ya, I got my CK hubs and wheels today. My bike is complete once again.

I thought the rear hub was going to be loud. Its fairly quiet so far. Do they get louder as they break in?

My wheel set up now;
CK stainless hubs in black laced with 14G spokes and aluminum nipples to brand new 02 36H Dee Maxx rims. Mavic still has the older style 321 Dee Maxx in stock.

Nice wheelset.
I've noticed that they get louder as the lube in them thins out. When you service them, they quiet back down. I think the older ones were louder because of the lube King used.

Yup they get louder once they break in, the Ringdrive lube has to transportate it self around the pawls. The grease dampens the sound. And if you want more noise just put in some oil which is approved by Chris King. Only then you have to service it more if you will ride much in wet conditions. Oil get filtier easier than the grease.

People really notice you while you are freewheeling you rearhub... rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.. ehehhe  always good. Drives xcers mad, when you are behind them. And you start spinning you freewheelbody. :p

Congrats with the new wheels.
The rear hub is quiet at first, but will be more noisey. Get some King ringdrive lube, and clean and lube the ringdrive once in a while.
I love the quick engagement

I just got back from a little ride around my house. The CK hubs sure have a lot of drag. How long does it take for the drag to go away? The rear is getting a little louder, too. When I left the house the rear hub was almost silent. Now, it just startin to buzz. Not too bad yet. I cant wait till its broke in. The engagement is almost instant. Not like the old Dee Maxx and XT rear hubs I was use to.

How often do the hubs need to be adjusted? What is the best lube to use? I am completely new to CK hubs. Ive read and heard from a few places that its best to use grease like Phils waterproof but any other suggestions? Should I have gotten any tools with the hubs? What tools should I get? How will I know when they need adjustment?

Most likely there is a little too much pre-load on the bearings in possibly both hubs but more likely just the rear. I would ride them like that for a few rides and then re-check the pre-load. If you readjust them now they might get sloppy and cause some damage. Usually King's are tight right at first and require an adjustment after a few rides and then as others have said they will be golden for about a year depending on how much and what type of riding they're subjected to. Wetter weather requires more maintenance as with all components. To adjust the pre-load just use a allen wrench in each side of the axle to loosen the outer pieces, then tighten the inner cone (non-drive side) by hand and then re-tighten the outer pieces. Test for proper pre-load.

King ringdrive lube is best (proper viscosity for the ring-drive mechanism) and you can order it from King, you don't really need any tools, there is a full rebuild tool kit available but all you need to clean and re-lube the hubs is two allens and some ring lube.

yes, check the wheels for play often during the first few months, if not more.

for bearings, use Rock N Roll Red Devil or Phil's.

for the Ring Drive, Ring Drive Grease. you can get it through QBP.

the rebuild tool is freakin' impossible to find at the moment. this is one new one on e-bay, and i suspect it will go for a pretty penny.

How come the kits are so hard to come by? CK must want to rebuild them instead of letting you do it yourself.

Do you need the tool set just to regrease? When will ya really need the tool set? only on a rebuild? How often do you have to actually rebuild them with normal riding?

This is my experience with the king rear:

Love the quick engagement and quality bearings, however my problem is with the amout of freewheel drag. On one ride it was so bad. When coasting, it would pull the rear d. forward and make the top chain go really slack. Then it would get sucked between the tire and the chainstay. I broke 2 chains like that.

Another sign of the same issue is when you are pushing your bike and the cranks spin.

Freewheel drag.

The trick is to clean it all out. Check out the king site for instructions. Mine needed a 3/32 allen key to take off the preload collar, then it just falls apart with a pull. Inside the hubshell there is a large bearing that the freehub spins on. This is the source. Try to spin it with your fingers. The sealed bearing is serviceable. VERY carefully remove the shield with a small blade. Don't cut the rubber gasket below. Remove the gasket and you can clean and relube the bearings. I used a shot of "SuperLube" aerosol. put that back together and then clean and lube the rachets with king ring drive.

That's my tip.

He Evrac, it also could be that your derailluer pullys / the wheels are filled up with dirt and grease and that would hold the chain back to. Then when coasting, it would pull the rear d. forward and make the top chain go really slack. I have had that a few times. Really annoying. But a cleaning job and it is bye bye.

I'm sorry you got the black ones dude, they turn purple :(
Where were you when I asked which color to get???? :)

How long did it take for them to turn purple? Did you leave your bike in the sun a lot? If they turn purple, Ill try and warrenty them.

From what I have heard, they drag when new and when dirty and also if the preload is set up to tight. Mine are brand new and the grease is still really fresh.

SWWWWEEEEETTTTT.

I have heard that if you leave your bike in the sun a lot the black will turn purple. CK told me they had problems with their anodizer and just switched to a new company.......

King used to anodize in house and I thought they still did? Black will last fine, it's the pewter hubs that look purple from my experiences.
