today's classical track of the day is:

Antonin Dvorak - Symphony No. 8 - I. Allegro con brio

the above album cover is deceptive, as the posted track is from the Baltimore Symphony Orhcestra, not Cleveland under Szell.

Dvorak 8 is a sentimental favorite of mine. i especially love the cello line that opens the work. Dvorak is an understated composer but still manages to paint a rich picture without resorting to histrionics.

may 9 cTotD, follow links back from there if you missed previous days.

and here's why i think the opening is so cool. i just whipped this out, so sorry if the chord notation is funny/incorrect. note that he starts out in G minor for the first 3 bars and one beat, then goes to Bb major for the next three beats, then to Ab major (!) for the next bar and two beats, then back to G minor for two beats, a bar, and two more beats, and then to G major, where he remains. brilliant.
