there will be no cTotD from May 5-7 as i'll be at whistler :) . today's track is from mahler 5, one of my favorite symphonies to play if not to listen to:

Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 5 - IV. Adagietto

<-- sorry, that's the only pic amazon had of this album

mahler 5's first movement (in the weird key of C#) is a veritable trumpet concerto, and the 3rd (in the more typical key of A) could be characterized as one for the french horn. the strings alone hold the 4th movement, a beautiful piece of writing in the rich key of F. the cleveland orchestra is renowned for their string sections' sound and ensemble, and this track shows them off.

I love Mahler. I'm by no means a classical afficianado, but the 2nd, 5th and 9th are my favorite symphonies by Mahler.

good choices. mahler 1 is also a popular one (and which my community orchestra is doing here in seattle on may 20 :) ). this'll be the third time i've played mahler 1, and i've done mahler 2 twice, and mahler 5 once.
