Using flats for trailriding doesn't sap power that badly. However, the problem is more that it's hard to get a nice, round pedal stroke with them. If you can't do this, of course it's less efficient. If you can, then the difference is fairly minimal. It's just easier to be sloppy with clipless.

I started riding road this past summer. Before I got on the bike, I was in the gym to get my spin right. I used a LifeCycle and the hill climbing proggie to do some basic intervals. It has those POS plastic platforms for pedals w/ something close to a PowerStrap for retension. To get my pedaling smooth, I'd spin at 110rpms w/ the straps set to super loose so I'll keep my feet from falling off to the side, but notthing holding them to the pedals. If you can do this for an extended period w/o bounching off the seat, I think it'll help rounding out your pedal stroke on flats. I know it's definitely helped my road spin.
