clipless platform pedals?

For years I used the SPD pd-m424 pedals. They retailed for $60. But it seems that Shimano is discontinuing them. What other pedals are similar? I'm not interested in the weird ones that Shimano offers like XT/XTR. Who else makes clipless/platform pedals? I don't want any amazon brands either. I saw the FUNN Mambas. Any other brands come to mind?

ps. what are these pedals technically called? Clipless platforms?

Saint SPDs have a much larger / more normal platform than the xt/xtr trail pedals.
But they don't float like the 434s and I find that the “trail” style pedals (what they all are now) can be a bit harder to get back in. But the old style are thicker and snag more rocks, so that kind of balances out.

I think they're called pedals. :clue:

I've been using Crankbrother Mallets, since forever.

I have 4.5 pairs of them, so I guess I'm biased in that it'd take huge issues for me to swap all the bikes over to something different. But in general my experience has been good with them.

Only major issue that I've had was with one pedal, the tiny bearing fell apart during a ride. This effectively lets the pedal slide off the spindle, as the nut can go right through the open space. That sucked walking out, but in all fairness I should have serviced the pedals when I noticed they weren't spinning very well. I wish I knew where that pedal went, as they'd probably warranty it. Maybe its in @HardtailHack 's parts garden of shame?

Rebuilding them is pretty easy, two beer job max.

they don't, but I haven't found it to be an issue TBH. i really like the saint SPDs, i finally retired my OG mallets 2 seasons ago.

I'm looking at these Funn Mambas at this point. I swear by Funn's bars and stems, but I never used their pedals. So I'm questioning them. If not, buy up stock in the 424's

I know it's the DH forum, but for what riding? And what style of shoes?

The usual suspects are shimano and crank bros. The newer HTC are getting a bit of buzz but haven't tried them.

And what's weird about the XT/XTR trail pedals? I think they strike a good balance between support and clearance. Not as much support or durability as the Saints, but a lot lighter.

This will be a trail bike that will take some abuse. "down country" i guess?

As far as the Amazon comment, I've used Funn since 2007 when their stuff came on my Sunday. But "MZYRH" pedals? No thanks. I can also get Shimano and Crank brothers on Amazon fwiw.

Shimano's pedals look like a road pedal. I just can't see those weird cages as doing anything. They look like their road pedals with that thin protector around them. Do they offer any support?

Since my shoes are SPD I wouldn't want a different cleat like the CB pedals. With all the issues CB had with pedals falling apart and dropper revisions every 2 weeks bitd, I could never bring myself to trusting anything by them. Maybe things have changed?

Depends on your shoes, including cleat depth and sole flex. You'll definitely get some support with something like the Shimano GE9, which is sort of a skate-style shoe with a bit of flex. But if you're using more of an XC-style shoe that doesn't flex much, maybe not much contact. Regardless, the little platforms are better than a tiny XC pedal for those moments when you're not fully-clipped in, and I suppose they do protect the pedal a bit as well. You'll probably get less strikes as compared to a Mallet or Saint, but more than say an XC version. They're sort of right in the middle of the extremes - in other words, probably a good compromise for the riding you describe.

I have a funn bash guard thing, fits my frame, hasn't broke.

Never looked at the saint pedal, now I have to consider them.

For what it's worth, I've got two pairs of XT platforms spd that are more than 10 years old. They look like crap and one pair needs a rebuild. But other than that, they seem indestructible.
