I think it's a great idea to get people who aren't really "riders." It's not aimed at anyone who reads this site.
The Limes are SUPER fun to ride though, don't knock 'em until you've tried 'em.
My buddy @ Trek uses one as his grocery-getter.
Pedals are way out so that you can have a steeper seat angle and a shorter ground to top of saddle height. This means you can sit down AND put your feet on the ground at the same time. Specialized does the same thing on their 26" hybrids. It makes for a very comfortable ride for those not used to a tall standover height.
They are an awesome idea, sadly I doubt they will thrive in car-obsessed North America. I would love to be wrong though.
Gawsh dernit. I dislike the pedals-being-out-in-front-of-the-seat-so-you-can-put-your-dern-feet-on-the-ground-design. Electra bikes does that, and they suck. It's great for adults who are afraid of riding a bike, but it totally limits the distance people are willing to go on those bikes because it's so biomechanically inefficient. Thus it stunts the potential growth of regular folks into people who actually enjoy going places farther than a couple blocks away on their bikes. It's not so bad when not in the extreme form (some seat setback/pedal forward setups are stupid far), but it still sucks. /rant
Mike, I hear ya, but it can be a stepping stone instead of a limiter.
I got my wife a $100 cruiser from Target to ride a mile to Sunday breakfast, then we upped the distance a little. Then she says, "I need a better bike." I got hard.
Yeah, sometimes they can be a good intro... My level of despise for the design varies with how the bikes are sold--and right now the market is flooded. It is unfortunate when people with POC bikes never know what they're missing out on. Best of both worlds is to get people on bikes, get them to use their bikes and have enough fun to want more from their bicycles. Unfortunately no magic solution.
...and back to the thread, Shimano tried the auto-shifting thing back in the day. Hopefully this stuff breaks with the trend "everything being a piece of crap these days."
