So I just discovered that the crusty old 8 speed cassette I dug out of my parts bin is actually XTR, and 11-30 at that, which is near perfect. The only problem is that I left the smallest cog on a bike that I sold, as well as the lockring. I need to replace the 11 tooth, or even grab a 12t if possible and get the thing on the new bike.

Questions:

Will a 9 speed 11t cog work fine on this cassette?

Can I use a 12t cog instead?

What's the deal with Miche cogs, will they work? They are readily available and cheap.

Do I need a special lockring, or will any 9 speed suffice?

12 will work if the next cog up is at least a 13

spacing on the last cog isn't crucial because you can set the limit screw a little tight to get the chain to line up with it.

11t cogs need a smaller lockring than 12, but that's the only factor unless you start talking about campagnolo hubs.

I don't see any reason why a miche won't work, but I don't have any first hand experience.
