I'm looking at replacing the monarch rt on my reign. But I'm having trouble finding something second hand that will fit. And dropping close to $AU1000 dollars on a X2 coil or the like is a bit out of the question at the moment.

How good are the RS kage or new fox van?

A vivid also looks like it would be cool but I have not heard great things about them?

I'd avoid the Vivid/Kage, tend to be unreliable in the long run. RC4 is good but can be hard to find in that size. Van RC is pretty decent and probably your best bet for a reasonably good budget shock - just make sure you keep the LS adjuster at no more than 1/3 of its range (or 1/2 at absolute max) because it starts getting a bit sticky/harsh above that.

Other good options could be the XFusion Vector HLR coil or the DSP Dueler coil - if you check Pinkbike buysell often sellers are happy to post international if you cover costs.

I agree $1000 is getting ridiculous to switch to coil, if you're patient I think you can find something for half that pretty easily. I'm not sure if you're in AU or NZ but it's worth contacting distros to see if they have any RC4s left in 7.875 as well, the small-shaft version is a brilliant shock.

I'm not sure if you're in AU or NZ but it's worth contacting distros to see if they have any RC4s left in 7.875 as well, the small-shaft version is a brilliant shock.

Didn't have to be that patient, one popped up second hand for $200 last night and will be in my hot little hands it the time it takes to get from Sydney to tassie.

@ Udi - if you find time why not apply the mapping program you get to use upon the Iron Horse 6POINT. A 2007 6POINT8 frame bought for 2013 has a 2016 Coil VividR2C and improved the VividAir R2C setup used.

Didn't have to be that patient, one popped up second hand for $200 last night and will be in my hot little hands it the time it takes to get from Sydney to tassie.

Well a large shaft RC 4 was in my hot little hands till I bolted it to the reign.

Got 2 rides on it so far and I am impressed. The bike is sitting higher in it travel and holding its speed better through lumpy stuff and through turns.

Still playing with settings and spring rates so it should get better.

Now once I work out the correct spring rate, I'm after a lighter spring.
Is anyone out there running one of the new light steel springs from fox or cane creek? Are they any good or I'd Ti the way to go

I've got an equivalent from stendec/SAR on my dh bike. It's nowhere near as light as the ti spring I took off but the main reason I got it was to bump up 25lbs from what I was running before. I'd get it for the increments and (claimed) higher accuracy of rating, not for the weight. They are lighter than normal steel springs but not by much.

You must have have one of those light, inaccurate, OG Ti Springs. I have a 3 x 475 Lbs Fox SLS spring and it's a svelte 350 Grams vs a Cane Creek 3 x 450Lbs steel spring which is 605 grams. A RCS 3 x 450 Lbs (heaviest Ti Spring on the planet) is around 450 grams.

It's an RCS I bought two years ago that I replaced.


I've got two other old ti springs made by god knows who. The SAR spring is a good bit heavier than all of them.
