WASHINGTON - TV comedian Stephen Colbert's mock presidential campaign suffered a setback Thursday when Democrats in South Carolina, the lone state where he pledged to run in both the Republican and Democratic primaries, denied him the political stage.

Although he paid a $2,500 filing fee, the executive committee voted to keep Colbert off the Democratic ballot, said state party Chairwoman Carol Fowler. The filing fee will be returned to him, she said.

WHAT?!? God I hate party politics... it's not that bad holding back a comedian, but the NY state rethuglican party fought like hell to keep McCain off the ballot. Only succumbed to public pressure and allowed him to be on the ballot, but legally they could've kept him off.

I know he's a comedian and probably wasn't serious, but if met the requirements to run and paid a filing fee, Who the F are they to "vote" that he can't be on the ballot?

Towing the party line.
Both parties know if he runs as an indy they'd lose to him, ha.

I am pretty sure that qualifying (usually with a certain amount of signatures) and then paying the fee is supposed to guarantee you the ability to run. That is the whole friggin' point of the bloody system.

You, as a Canuckistani, obviously, have no idea what goes into our system. :p

As for what comes out of it...well...you have a better grasp than most... :busted:

I read the 35000.00 filing fee was too much to justify the republican ticket.
I read on the interweb that the Dem filing fee was only $2,500 or so, but that the Democratic Party would have to put up $20,000+ to actually put his name on the ballot. It wouldn't surprise me if that dollar figure played a part in the denial. Can anyone confirm?

No, the Dem fee is $2500, the Rep fee is $35k. You pay the party to put you on the ballot, it's just how they roll on the right, I guess.
