Commuting: Cyclocross, Hardtail, or a Bad Boy

I posted this to the Lounge, but it was quickly buried. This might be the more appropriate place to put it...

I have a new job about 25 miles from my home, which I can take the train to work. I was thinking about for the rainy season getting a bike with disc brakes.

A cyclocross bike is the best for a road commute, but I don't plan on doing and cyclocrossing. I wouldn't mind a new hardtail, but it is not the most efficient for road. And I have not ridden the C/Dale Bad Boy Ultra enough to know if it is any good off-road.

Any opinions? Particularily from owners of a Bad Boy.

maybe a fischer 29" mtn bike would fit the bill? big wheels to run slicks on, plus fully-off-roadable frame. that or a cyclocross bike with disc and a flat bar, similar to a kona dew. those can be a blast to ride off road
That is not a bad idea. I could get the wheel momentum of the bigger wheel and a much different kind of bike off road...

You can stick 700c (29") disc wheels on any hardtail FYI. Great way to double your bikes. Just build a set of decent disc wheels, or Mavic has a cool pair called the "Speed City" I think. If I had only 1 bike to commute/ride on, that'd be it. I know a lot of the pro XC racers do that too, so they can get the road miles in while on the road, but not have to bring an entire road bike along...

Holy Cow!!! He is right!!!!

This answers a question I had about the Bad Boy, which was why is the listed geometry the same as their mountain bikes. The Bad Boy is just a hardtail with 700c wheels.

This makes my decision much easier, considering that there are very few 29 inch frames.

Oh ye of little faith!
It's the s***! I still want a cross bike though, even if it's for no other reason than a distributor messed up and sent me a Sibex titanium fork for 29" wheels, not the 26" wheeled version I had ordered. Don't want my extremely large sum of money to go to waste...
Bad Boy is a cool bike, it still comes with 2 sets of wheels, right? Just get a nice-ass disc hardtail, and have the shop build a set of wheels around a set of Deore hubs or something, or even XTs or XTRs if you wanna go big.

"Told ya so!"

The Bad Boy does not come with two sets of wheels, just the 700c. I suppose that is the best thing for most RM's since they probably have more 26 inch disc wheels than 700c.

Thanks for your advice. You are the greatest RM ever.

Yeah, I rule.
I think it used to come with 2 sets, and I think they even had a full suspension version of the bike. I guess it never really took off though, cool idea.
Good luck though!
