I see it's back on the agenda in Australia as well as in Britain. As far as I know you don't have them in the US or Canada. Obviously I reckon it's a retarded idea but I'm beginning to think it's inevitable one way or the other. Anything for the war on terror right.
Hopefully any moves towards this will be vigorously opposed on the streets but I have my doubts. Control by increments. Yay deomcracy.

As a semi-related aside I'm required by law here in Japan, like all foreigners, to carry my quaintly named "alien registration card" at all times even though I'm a permanent resident. In reality I never carry it, mostly as my little protest at an obviously racist law (Japanese people don't need to carry any ID) and haven't encountered any real problems.

we're required to carry a state (not national) ID card -- typically a driver's license -- and provide it when asked. If they want it to go national, they should just hook up the states' systems and call it good.

And you know darn well it'll be the Republicans here -- ya know, the ones who want 'less' govt. -- to push this agenda.

Fortunately for us, it's not an issue and if we can change out the admin or congress control soon, then we should be fine for a while longer.

Yep, ths idiocy seems to cross ideological borders. In Australia it was originally brought up in the mid 1980's by the then Labour government. It was defeated in the streets, thankfully. Hopefully it will be again.

Same thing in the US. I'm supposed to have my Green Card with me at all times. I only take it with me when I'm going out of country though...

Anything can be counterfieted..{spelling is off}..

Some redneck at a DMV in TENNESSEE was handing out/making fake drivers licences. They got caught, but this whole illegal thing is organized if i had to make a guess ..
The US needs "another" special task force better than the INS to send these people back..

National ID card won't work. It will cost "me" & every other born here citizen waiting in line "all day" & paying out the azz for it..& the illegals will probably get fake ones..

Who knows what the answer is....A Great Wall might help, but tunnels are everywhere..
Got to shoot them like in communist Germany or something harsh to stop this massive invasion......

FYI: It's MORE illegal & can get arrested in Alabama for having a DILDO,but an illegal get's a citation. That is true !

Another classic!

Xenophobic much?

Also, as much as everyone bitches, if you have a driver's license, you have a national id already in the system.

So you actually have a card that is green? I always thought "green card" was a euphimism. Any reason you don't get American citizenship. Partsy got his but they still won't let him be president.
I would be eligible for Japanese citizenship but at this point in time the Japanese don't officially allow duel citizenship and I'm sure as sh*t not giving up my Australian passport.

It's actually mostly white. All sorts of neato holograms on it. Apparently it used to be green, hence the name.

My card is good for another 9 years, I think...I'll probably get citizenship before I have to renew it. They hit you up for the application fees though, and I'm really in no hurry to chant that oath.

(Btw, the US doesn't officially recognize dual citizenship either. Canada doesn't consider taking the US oath of allegiance enough to renounce your Canadian citizenship though. Funny stuff...)

Those types of dependancies are interesting and very telling.

What's it take to garner Canadian citizenship? I know getting into the EU is a bitch...but I don't think I'd mind Vanc.

I remember when Partsy was getting his US citizenship sorted out we had a chat about it because until recently Australia didn't allow dual citizenship if your first citizenship was Australian. That meant people like me and Partsy born and bred in Australia couldn't get citizenship in another country without first renouncing our Australian citizenship. Rupert Murdoch gave up his Australian citizenship in favour of American citizenship so he could buy FOX in the 80's. In 2004 (from memory) the law changed to allow Australians duel citizenship so I know for a fact that Partsy has 2 passports and that was never any problems from the American side.

A lot of countries seem to have these "don't ask, don't tell" unofficial policies regarding duel passports. My kids officially have to choose Japanese or Australian citizenship when they turn 20 as Japan doesn't allow duel citizenship in any form for adults. I've been told though that if they choose Japanese citizenship but hold on to their Australian passports the Japanese authorities turn a blind eye as long as you don't do anything stupid like waltzing through the airport shouting "look at my 2 passports".

I personally don't see the problem with dual or even multiple passports but some people seem to get sandy vaginas about it.

In the UK it is supposed to carry biometric data, which means that the Govt has your DNA and fingerprints on file.

Of course, if you're not going to do anything wrong, why would you object? It's a small sacrifice to make to have a low crime rate, 不?
