Nero Burning ROM isn't free but it's a pretty comprehensive program and has been very stable for me. OEM version came free with my CD burner.

Yes, version 6 came with my DVD burner ($70 dual layer from newegg.com). It works well. Intuitive as well, lots of options but not overwhelming.
I burn my free AOL cds in the microwave. Makes pretty blue sparks.
I use cdrecord. Works great. 
iTunes for music, Mac OS X for data.
