computer magnet mounting problem

I'm mounting a PlanetBike Protege 8.0 computer on my wifes Superlight but I ran into a few problems.

The installation instructions say that the magnet and the sensor need to be within 1-2 mm of each other. Is it just me or does that seem to be an impossibly close distance for a mountain bike? 2mm = 0.07874 inches. That doesn't even seem like enough space to operate safely with tire changes and the such.

I installed both and worked with them for a while but can't them them close enough together for the system to function properly.

Do most magnets need to be this close to the sensor or do I need to look for something with a longer range? Any ideas on how to get this thing to work?

Usually what I do when setting them up is install the sensor so it touches the magnet. Then I tighten the sensor down almost all the way to make sure I get the right height and that it's picking up the magnet. Spin the wheel to make sure it's working, slowly as it will touch the sensor each time slightly Ater I know it's working, I rotate the sensor ever so slightly so that it doesn't touch the magnet while spinning, and tighten down the sensor all the way.

They do have to be quite close, but as long as you do it right and take care while changing wheels, it should be fine.

those are good hints. My problem though is with too much clearance. I can't find a spot to mount both of them where they are close enough together.

I need clues on how to get the two closer together.

Use sections of an old inner tube under the sensor where it meets the fork. The heavy duty 'punture resistant' tubes from Wal Mart work best, since they are thicker.

You should be able to vary the distance between the sensor and magnent by moving things either farther or closer to the hub ie: closer to the hub, the spokes are closer to the fork leg, farther from the hub the spokes are farther from the fork leg. Additionally you can fine tune things by moving the sensor around the leg a little bit, there is probablly a flat spot on the sensor suggesting that it should be parallel to the magnent but it usually can be tweaked 20-30 degrees and still function properly.
