the dreamliner took off this morning. a bunch of us went out and watched it (surprisingly) lift off! It's been sitting in our hanger for a few months now, it was pretty cool to see it finally fly.

Holy smurfs....are the wings really " bowing" up that much or is it an optical illusion?

I wondered what shook our building this AM......I work @ the S end of the runway, just off Bev. Park Rd.

the wings on the 787 are actually bowed up. it doesn't look too strange until you see it next to a 767...

(I work at ATS at the south end of Paine field off 112th)

Looks like any other boeing plane, I don't see the big deal!
How much stress can you put on plastic before it breaks?

It was a very exciting day. The wings are bowed up but they also flex more than the aluminum ones. Almost everyone yesterday in the runway was commenting on how nice the whole plane, specially the wings, looked.

only the skin is carbon fiber. all the frame work and wing ribs are still aluminum. the company i used to work for did alot of the prototype leading edge wing ribs.

That is kind of a misleading statement. The majority of the aircraft structure comes from the carbon fiber shell. It ain't just replacing the "aluminium cladding"

    good info here

Oh and to answer Marty's question: LOTS

The 787 Dreamliner uses a variety of advanced materials:

•50% carbon-fiber composite, in the fuselage, wings, tail, and interior components
•20% aluminum, primarily on the wing and tail leading edges
•15% titanium, primarily in the engines
    •10% steel
    •5% other materials

we were making some of the only aluminum in the plane.

It's a lot like newer DH Bikes...lighter than the ones from the nineties, requiring less power to do the same work. oh, and yes the wings are designed to flex - yet possess a huge safety factor in strength.
:-) It was exciting to see... I'm an Industrial Eng on the Everett Flightline
