Personally speaking, I'm WAY more comfortable clipped in. Keeping your feet planted on the pedals is nice, and I'm a big fan of the added ease of tossing the rear end of the bike around. If you've been riding them for a bit you'll have no problem getting out of them fast enough if you need to.
Shoe wise, I've run exclusively Sidis for everything from road to DH for a while. I picked up a pair of the Shimano DX clipless shoes because I got a deal on them, and the added ease of walking is nice, but that's about it.
