SS commuters rule. If you're worried about hills, just get a flip flop hub. You might have to get off the bike to change, but it just takes a second. Otherwise, I work at a bike shop, and Trek makes a pretty sweet commuter. Check out their Sport Urban 100 and 200. they have kinda crappy components, but good enough for a commuter!

This is what I commute on....
The Specialized HardRock....with lots of old DH parts
