it's driving me crazy, do i need to start backing up my backups??? i've got a 3.5" MassCool external case with a 250Gb NEC drive. It was setup on my old machine for months and worked beautifully with an 80Gb drive. Since getting my new machine, I swapped the HDs around and it will work fine for a few months, then just randomly corrupt the whole drive.

any ideas here? also, it's only showing 186.31 Gbs and under Disk management, it's listed as 'Healthy (Active)'

:help:

Who truely makes that 250GB? NEC, to my knowledge doesn't make hard drives. Check to see if it's the old IBM (deathstars), or some other Maxtor or Hitachi drive. If it is, replace it and problem solved.

Edit: try the 300gb PATA Seagates w/ the 8mb cache. I love those drives, own two in my media box (SATA version). But becareful of the Seagates as well. Do some reading on them, there's a version out there w/ bad firmware.

actually, i'm pretty sure it's a maxtor ... only about a year old. do you think the drive is truly the problem? i forgot to mention it did the same thing with another 80Gb drive i had in it first. here's the history:

old machine/80Gb HD: worked fine for ~6 months
new machine/80Gb HD: corrupted after the first week
new machine/250Gb HD: worked for several months, has corrupted twice

leads me to believe its not the drive, but something else. i just have no idea what that something else could be.

Sounds like you have an nVidia nFarce, I mean, nForce chipset motherboard. Check maxtor's website for a firmware update though I think you'll need to contact support directly for them to send you the firmware update.

Here is the Maxtor knowledgebase article about possible fixes for it...
